I hear these stories about huge powerhouse people in the business who got their foot in the door by some strange happinstance and I don't know what it is about today's environment but it feels damn near impossible. There is no wandering into a studio in 2024 and getting an internship. Everyone has a home studio or works out of a laptop. Its just a completely different scenario.

I just remember seeing all the audiophile stereo equipment from this time. It was so expensive! Now, even the most humble audio interfaces are virtually, in not entirely, audibly transparent in their conversion.

I’ve been making electronic music (always more of a samplist than a sound designer/synth freak) and I think part of the mystique was being that ‘one guy’ at sixth form who’d bought a used S1000. I had that paired with a Korg X3 and used a fostex x28 four track as a mixer. I used an Acorn Archimedes and a sequencer called Serenade, which worked perfectly well-like a total geek I remember writing to Future Music moaning that they ignored the Acorn. Used that all through uni without adding a thing. Never tried to make it more than a hobby but played my cassettes alongside vinyl records at parties and raves. Point is: would I have been that into ‘poking a daw screen on a laptop’ at 16? Probably not.

Those two Scritti albums have mesmerised and fascinated us for decades, conversation upon conversation about them...soooo at LAST I'm hearing the man with the know-how actually talk about the making of them. We got nuggets of info and one or two startling revelations of how it was done but I quite like the fact that we didn't get much in the way of detail. Quite nice to preserve the mystery. I just enjoyed hearing him talk about these masterpieces. Loved his work with Me'shell Ndegeocello too. Peace Beyond Passion is a wonderful album.

About 1.5 years ago, I purchased the Lewitt 540S Subzero condenser microphone. To be honest, I want to warn everyone because I am so disappointed that I can't even express it. I live in Turkey, where the dollar is extremely expensive. Despite this, I fell for Lewitt Audio's deceptive marketing strategies and bought this condenser microphone for myself. My vocals sound so awful that no matter how much I mix, I can’t get rid of that unpleasant tone. To make matters worse, I own an Apollo Twin audio interface, and even with that, the microphone’s performance is terrible. Over the years, I’ve used nearly 10 different microphones, and I’ve never been this dissatisfied. I want to sell it second-hand, but no one is interested. Honestly, I feel like I’ve been scammed. All those videos you see online are lies. This microphone sounds like a $5 microphone and cannot be tamed. I just wanted to warn others. Buying a Lewitt is a regret

To the last few comments in the video. Yeah, this rig has more dynamic range because it's using no compression, and no limiting. A lot of modern FOH guys are using compression per channel, then compression/limiting per group of channels, then limiting the crap out of the stereo buss. Modern systems by their very nature have a tremendous amount more dynamic range by virtue of having many times more watts, and power handling of speakers that are crossed over far more precisely by digital drive racks. I noticed how much joy it gave him to say that rig sounded more like vinyl, and modern rigs sound more like an ipod. We can't do it, but I'd go out on the limb in saying if we turned off the 10 layers of dynamics on a modern rig and let Alan Parsons mix Floyd in 1973 using that rig, it would not only be jaw dropping, but it would likely have just as much "vibe", and far more dynamic range. There's a pervasive sickness in audio these days to get "loudness" by using tons of comp/limiting, but that is a style that's chosen by the engineer, not a attribute of the PA rig they're running. That being said, I'm sure that old set up sounded pretty cool. I'd definitely mix a show on it if given the chance. ;) Signed. Pro audio engineer that runs FOH and monitors for a Pink Floyd tribute out of the southwest.

As explained in the talk, I cover the range 1959-1980. The Linn definitely gets mentioned in context of the TR-808, but there will need to be a part 2 to cover the 1980s digital revolution...Linn, Drumulator, DMX, MPC-60 et al...!
