Hi from Texas! This video is just what I needed as I am interested in this airship fight when I go to Germany next month. What is the price of a short sightseeing trip? On the website I found that the prices to be around 600 to 1000 euros for an hour or less which is pretty darn expensive for a short sightseeing flight. Plus I'd have to double that for my girlfriends ticket. Do I have that right? Can you help on pricing? Thanks!
@airshipheritagetrust1419Ай бұрын
Hi there, glad you liked the video. Yes the prices sound about right for the hours flights. They do shorter flights but I think they get booked up pretty quick. We booked ours about 8 months in advance to get that particular weekend. One good thing is that as they are sort of semi rigid, they seem not to be affected by stronger winds etc. Hope you get your flight and enjoy!

A ship with two Tails ! A subtle, intelligent sense of humour, Indeed. Too bad that the R101's terrible saga marked the end of this excellent Airship. The Germans were able to resume construction of their Famous and safe Zeppelins in the middle 20s. Starting in the late 20s and through most of the 30s, the Graf Zeppelin made regular trips to New York and Brazil. And even made a tour around the World featuring a full "load" of Famous passengers. Starting in New Jersey, she flew to Germany. And from there, to Japan. After a few fantastic days in Tokyo, the ship was flown to Los Angeles, facing terrible storms across the Pacífic. From Califórnia, she flew to New Jersey, amidst the madness of zillions of Fans. The much larger Hedinburg flew until 1937, alternating routes with the older sister. They featured several engines, some of them capable of producing reverse thrust -- highly important for manoeuvring. The fuel was a special and extremely Light "Blue Gas" produced by Zeppelin -- accordingly, the fuel equaled more boyance and not extra weight. . British and American vessels featured steel frames, while the German Zeppelins had extremely light Duralumin structures . In sum, much lighter airships although highly resistent -- the Graf even survived a major storm over the Pacífic, during which a few ships sunk. The Airship was presumed "dead" for 2 days, being later on spoted by a passenger vessel. After WW 2, Aviation became the Queen of the skies -- land opperated planes and not the former flying boats. In sum, the Zeppelins over time would be doomed, like the flying boats. Neverthless, both categories still emanate romantic, nostalgic feelings. Thank you for this great video. Warm Regards from Lisbon, Portugal.

Could someone please tell me what that ring of holes near the R101s nose is for? And why does the the paint seemingly change in the Mid-section of the ship? Many thanks.
@airshipheritagetrust14192 ай бұрын
Hi there, the holes at the front also matched those in the tail were designed to let air through the interior of the hull to ensure any leaking gas was "flushed through". The paint or "dope" of the ship was changed as most of the outer cover was changed in Summer of 1930 and so you can see some differences in the pictures. It's sometimes hard to see or shows up more depending on when the photo of the ship was taken, and whether it was wet or not from weather, and also the light shining on it. British weather is very variable.

For me the most magical moment of our trip was when the pilot did a full stop in the air over Friedrichaffen. The buoency was balanced about 500m of the ground. Full stop means no speed, no engine runing. Only an airship can do that. Also we did talk a lot with the pilots, as a pilot it was very interresting.
@airshipheritagetrust14192 ай бұрын
Yes! it's fantastic when they hover. Also the fact that you can see and interact with the pilots is excellent. It takes some time to re-adjust your brain that you are not in an aeroplane, and that's the type of flying experience you are used to. Airship flights are so unique, imagine what it would have been like in the 1920's and 30's.

Is there a special licene required like for instance for a helicopter, or is it just a type-rating ? Is the ship IFR equiped ?
@JulianFischerJulesBarner2 ай бұрын
I live in the region and there is an interesting side effect to road traffic when this ship is airborne, I've noticed it a few times on the highway passing by the lake. Regional drivers who are used to it usually continue as usual and keep their speed on the highway, whereas cars with foreign plates or non-regional swiss numbers slow down significantly because drivers keep looking at the ship 😂

I took a short trip on the Zeppelin NT out of Friedrichshafen a few years ago (I was attending the annual Aero Friedrichshafen). I found it the most relaxing and enjoyable flying experience ever (and I fly Cessnas myself !). You hit the nail on the head with the one safety concern I had......the open window and a phone or camera dropped from 1,000 feet on someone's head.....fatal. Maybe they could put in something like a perspex viewing bubble.
@Leon_der_Luftige2 ай бұрын

@airshipheritagetrust14192 ай бұрын
Yes, it took a bit of confidence to get your phone close as it seemed calm until you leaned out and hit the 50mph slipstream, however, it seems a "thing" with airships as you could open the windows on Skyships. I know smaller planes the pilot can open the windows, but it's just a "wow" moment.

The government asked too much by expecting to send its new ship all the way to India. She only had one 16 hr. trial flight. Officials sent the ship out in poor weather, because the Imperial Conference was in session in London. She had to get to India and back as a demonstration while the conference was still in session. The trial flights planned by the captain had never been carried out. Thanks for making this terrific video about this great ship.
