Some thought provoking ideas there mate. I'm always wondering how to judge which hills to walk and which to run. I really need to practice this.
@RunFreeandStrong2 күн бұрын
Thanks Mark. Yes, not easy and practice will help. Either start slow at bottom of hill, see how far we can go, and walk if it feels too hard or HR creeps into zone 3. The back-to-back will help because day 2 is running when tired and not recovered.

Really useful review Reto, it’s ironic as I’m on holiday now overseas and Garmin had a promo where they reduced 955 from £440 to £299 but the offer expired 2-Dec and it would have arrived while I was away. Garmin had no info re what would happen re signature etc so I couldn’t risk it. Here the 965 is £520 so I thought the 955 would be a solid cost effective upgrade.
@RunFreeandStrong8 күн бұрын
Glad you found it useful, Andy. The 955 is a solid choice, but with the 975 expected spring 2025, I would not be surprised if Garmin reduces the 965 for Christmas. Thanks for watching and supporting!

Great review and reasons reto 😃 Can you turn off the vo2max measurement in normal run mode ? On my epix2 I can only turn it on or off in trail mode.
@RunFreeandStrong9 күн бұрын
Thanks for the kind feedback. It doesn't look like the VO2 max measurement can be disabled in the "Run" mode, only in the "Trail Run" and "Ultra Run" modes. Reason being is that VO2 max is difficult to determine for trail runs and ultra runs given there are so many additional variables, like technical and other trail conditions. So Garmin gives the runner the option to turn off for trail and ultras so VO2 max is not miscalculated. For the 965, Garmin has improved the VO2 max algorithm for trail and ultra runs, but that's likely a work in progress from a software perspective. I have the same issue with Garmin and Strava grade adjusted pace (GAP), which doesn't take into account the technical elements of vert (running up an asphalt hill vs a hill with lots of roots and rocks). We have to remind ourselves that technology is a useful enabler, but we shouldn't lose the joy of running because we rely too much on metrics.

Hi Reto, you've certainly put a lot of thought into this - and a 200 miler, that sounds like a David Goggins challenge (think he did a 205 miler about 10-15 years back)! I'm sorry that you haven't accumulated enough running stones to qualify for the entry to the full distance UTMB raffle but being at UTMB for the lesser distance (50K?) if you get lucky sounds awesome, I bet the atmosphere there will be amazing. I haven't really put lots of thought into 2025 although I'm all set for the Prom Classic 10K in January (Nice), the Great Manchester Run (10K) in May and the Manchester Half in October. I'm hoping to be able to announce another European race aswell but that's still unconfirmed. I also fancy some trail races, not big distances like you but 5-10K events for variety. I'll also hit 100 Tourist Parkruns in January/February.

This was super interesting, thanks so much for doing the video and it's well done! Nutrition and diet have been a difficult road for me. I'll spare the details on the struggles in my life but will say that good, healthy food is very expensive. I've had to eat foods I really don't want to eat - lol. I've never been a big meat eater and currently will have only one serving of meat over a 24 hour period and will go without meat about 2 to 3 days a week. I'll be doing more research on various diets and hope to come up with somethiing that would work for me as I try to manage chronic health issues. My goal remains to increase my fitness level to allow me to run longer distances. It's all so very interesting!
@RunFreeandStrong28 күн бұрын
Thank you for giving the genesis of the video with your question! The most important takeaways are to realize there are many options and that these options have benefits and some less desirable side effects. Highly processed food with high refined sugar content is probably not good for our health. That doesn't mean we can't enjoy dessert or an alcoholic drink. We should do what works best and be aware of the impact of our choices. Even small changes can improve our health. I hope you're doing well and enjoying the early snowfall in Colorado!

Hi Reto (and Christian), awesome 200m reps there Reto, I calculated around 3:20-3:30/km, that is so quick and incredibly consistent across the 10 reps. Were you wearing the Cliftons for that session, I saw from the slow mo that you’re a mid foot striker?
@RunFreeandStrong29 күн бұрын
Hi Andy, thanks for your kind message to Christian and me. The consistency is a result of running these 200's in a controlled manner, rather than "racing." I recently bought a pair of Hoka Mach X 2, which is a carbon trainer (not racing shoe), and am using this shoe for my track workouts. Previously, I did use the Clifton's for track workouts, and still use them for tempo / progression runs on the road. Great eye you have, yes, I am a mid-foot striker. I used to be a heel-striker, and worked to shorten my stride and increase my cadence doing strides. Thanks again!
@AndyCliffMTB29 күн бұрын
@ You’re welcome Reto, I know you’re very careful to map out your training schedule. How do the Mach X2s feel vs the Cliftons, are they a lot less cushioned? Clearly quicker😊Interesting how you changed your gait to move from heel to mid-foot, I think if I increase my pace (and cadence to shorten the stride) I’ll heel strike less, and that’s probably a good thing in my situation😊
@RunFreeandStrong28 күн бұрын
@@AndyCliffMTB The Mach X 2 are high stack because of the sandwich construction with the 2 layers of foam and the carbon plate in the middle. Maybe marginally less cushioned, but not much. Yes, agreed, moving to a mid-foot strike enables us to better absorb and return the energy, with lower injury risk.

I need to start doing this. I have access to the high school track one day a week. I might not be able to do 10 but I think I could do 5 x 200 (I'm 70 years old) but it's hard to say as I only ever run/walk trails. My shortest run/walk is about 8 miles with 1,330' elevation gain/loss and my fastest time is 1:53:07. (14:07/mi average) I want to get that down to 8 miles in 1:30:00 by the end of 2025. My all time top "sprint" speed recorded in the last three years is 5min/mi on level ground but for only a few yards.
@RunFreeandStrong29 күн бұрын
Thanks again for your thoughts. It's helped my trail running a lot, including my ability to change pace and make quick decisions. Brain-muscle connection. And it's not only a speed workout, it's also a strength workout. You have me beat by a few years, I'll be 62 next month lol. And even more inspirational what you're doing!

Does cheating on the keto diet affect the results? Never-mind, you answered it at 2:39 :o) Ive been on a keto friendly diet for 6 years, Occasionally I go strict keto but it's hard when friends like to have you over for dinner. Ive never run any races but I have added trail running to my training, I'm mostly just a long distance backpacker doing 200 to 500 mile sections of the PCT a couple of times a year. I read there is a practical limit to burning fat at around 800 cal/hr so adding carbs ups your ability to burn more calories per hr. My personal testing seems to confirm this but it's hard to tell if you are burning any glycogen even on a strict keto diet. My blood fasted glucose is slightly high even on a strict keto diet (5.5 A1c or Serum Glucose of 95 at times) but I haven't taken any test strips on trail to test under load or at the end of a hike but I keep thinking about doing that. I eat all the things you showed (you're a good cook) but not as much of the plant material as I probably should. This made me hungry @ 6:43 . . . 10,000 cal per 100 mile race seems low but maybe it's because only light weight people run that far. I'm 200 - 220 pounds while backpacking (with the pack on) and I burn around 4,000 to 5,000 a day doing 20-30 miles in 10 to 15 hrs with all the elevation gain/loss. (according to my HR data)
@RunFreeandStrong29 күн бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience. And thank you for the kind words. Kudos on your PCT long hikes / runs! Having run the CT sections of the AT, I would love to explore a little of the PCT. Appreciate your insights on fat burning and glycogen and glucose. I have not done any testing and something to consider. Anecdotally, I learned in a couple of podcasts with Dave Roche, who just won the back-to-back Leadville 100 and Javelina 100, that ultra runners burn about 1,000 cals per hour (which would translate to approx 15,000 cals for a 15-hour race), so they have to be super adapted to fat oxidation and supplement with up to 120 g carbs per hour. Thanks again!

Great video! I was just watching a video of a high carb vegan runner today and he said its important for him to run every day because if he takes a break his mechanics feel off and running feels much harder. Thats something I experienced myself on high carb diets but never on keto, there are just no kinks to work out if that makes sense.
@RunFreeandStrongАй бұрын
Thank you very much for your kind comments. I transitioned from a high-carb diet because of ongoing struggles with sugars and at times being hyperglycemic. And I experienced running injuries that were the result of soft tissue inflammation. So for me the change has been positive. Thanks again!

Well researched and informative video there Reto. I’ve never run more than the Manchester Half as you know so fueling has not really come onto my radar but the argument seems very compelling for high fat low carb diets. The only thing I’d worry about with high fat would be high cholesterol as a result🤔Thanks for educating us all😊
@RunFreeandStrongАй бұрын
Thanks for your kind words, Andy. Transitioning to an HFLC diet is both a personal choice and a lifestyle choice. It's not for everyone. There are many benefits beyond fueling for long distances. As far as cholesterol, there are meals like fish, chicken and pork that are fine.

David Roche has entered the chat lol (David is definitely in the pro-carb camp). My personal world view is when Zach is racing he is doing 40g carbs an hour and when David is pushing he is doing 120g carbs an hour. So the reality for normal humans is something in the middle. I am more on the David end of the spectrum in the belief of consistent well fueled (with carbs) training and recovery would give higher performance but the human body is a complex thing and what works for one doesn’t work for others. David does use external ketones, the science is out on those but basically he doesn’t see a downside and is breaking records while using them so he is keeping them up. IIRC, he said the body Fatmax will become efficient “enough” on regular training. His only training he does fasted is a long run but the next day has to be a recovery day. W/O carbs the day before he’ll see a performance drop if he goes out the next day. Lots of interesting food for thought out there.
@RunFreeandStrongАй бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to watch and sharing your comments, Chris. The video was intended to share my experience, and open a conversation, with a caveat (included in the video) that diet is a personal choice, and what works for me may not work for others. And, as you said, it's not binomial. Jeff Browning and Zach Bitter are in middle of the spectrum. I didn't include Mike McKnight, who is an absolute low-carb beast, setting records at the 200+ mile distance, and there are others. Yes, agreed that David Roche is a regular carb guy, and it's obviously working for him. I also wanted to include that there are other benefits to a HFLC diet, including reduced cancer risks and delayed neurological degenerative disease risks associated with diets high in processed foods and refined sugars. Thanks.
