There is nothing wrong with buying gear. It is all about understanding that gear will not necessarily make you better. It is the right use of gear that helps a photographer improve. I hope this makes sense.

My first "street" photo was around 2005-2006 when my wife and I went to NYC. I fell in love with taking candid shots of other people not even knowing that Street Photography was a real thing. I started with a Kodak point and shoot; migrated to a Nikon D50 with a kit lens. Once I got comfortable with the DSLR, I upgraded to a Nikon D300 and started getting better glass for night time street... mostly the Nikkor f/2.8 zoom. Around 2014, I upgraded again to the Nikon D750 and started adding some fast primes. My upgrade cycle was around 7 years at this point. However, in 2016/17, I thought the Fujifilm X-T10 mirrorless kit would be my future. It was smaller and more compact. That lasted maybe a year before going back to the D750. Between 2018 and the beginning of 2020 were my peak years of shooting street. I even added a Fujifilm X100F to compliment my D750. I was very satisfied with my setup as far as gear at this point. Fast forward another 7 years and I added the Nikon Zf as my mirrorless kit. I also started collecting older Nikon gear, not because I thought it would make me a better photographer, but because it added history and the evolution of digital photography. I now have dozens of bodies starting with the Nikon D1 as the oldest (1999) to the D750 still being my newest DSLR. I also added a few film cameras to the mix as well. As you can see that is my LONG journey with gear. I said very little about shooting. As I got more comfortable with my gear, I focused more on composition and themes (loosely). I tried to develop my own style and got more and more comfortable getting "into the scene" to take pictures. My favorite focal length was 35mm and my Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G was my favorite focal length. Around 2020, with everything closing, I also sank into a bit of a mental health lapse. I considered selling everything and never picking up a camera again. 2020-2022 I took the least amount of photos ever. I mean maybe 1500 total in two years and most of them were not street, but junk photos to text something from a grocery store to my wife or something. nothing creative at all. Even holiday photos were minimal. 2023 was when my wife virtually kicked my butt and said that I need to get out of my funk and get back out shooting. I went from shooting around 500 the previous year to almost 6000 photos. My confidence is not there yet like it was when I was shooting before, but it is getting better. I also shoot almost 100% in Aperture Priority on my digital and as close to Aperture on my film cameras. My 2025 goal is to get out at least 4-5 times a week for a photo walk. It doesn't always have to be street, but I need to get out and shoot. Practice new way of composition (like some of your videos have mentioned) and try new editing styles. I might also pick up a project that I had wanted to do back in 2018 and put a small book toegther. My wife also wants me to put a book together for her on our favorite beach vacation moments. I am feeling much better both mentally and physically and look forward to the upcoming year. Your channel has helped add a little more spark to my passion and I thank you greatly for that.

What I sometimes miss today is that photos on websites are now one after another,. I like it when some text is visible with a personal short note of the photographer, how and/or why the picture was taken, or something about the place where it was taken, or a poem, at least a title. Otherwise, pictures become pictures that become boring, as you mentioned.
@AristeidisSfakianos
@AristeidisSfakianos 2 күн бұрын
That’s a great point. I know there’s some debate-often from highly respected photographers-about whether images should have titles at all. Some believe you should let viewers create their own stories around an image. Personally, I prefer adding a guiding title, especially when sharing my work on social media. I haven’t done that on my website yet, but it might be worth considering. Thank you for sharing your perspective-it’s a valuable topic for discussion!

G A S. Been there. Top end Nikon and full set of lenses, cost a fortune! Now I have 3 cameras that I love, all are Olympus M43. Glass, good glass, is the most important thing. For street work I use an E M1 MkII, its waterproof! 3 primes, 34mm, 50mm and a 150mm telephoto. Small, light, sharp. The second hand market is teaming with great kit. (Note we double the focal length on M43 so my 50mm f1.2 is actually 25mm f1.2). Good words and good advice in all I have seen of your video's.

Nice one! I’d love to get my hands on some quality Olympus gear someday. I don’t have much experience with Olympus, but I know it has a loyal fan base-and that speaks volumes. Thanks so much for sharing your insights with me, and I’m really glad you enjoyed the video!

You have a good casual way of presenting. I have been a photojournalist for a very long time in the UK. Now I am looking to photograph for a hobby as I am retired. So I am looking around for different ideas. Most on here tell the same thing time and again but 'preach' at us, 'this is the way!' Rules are made to be broken, all photographers must experiment. You give people an idea and do so in a calm way without a whip. Like your work. Thanks. We are alway learning.
@AristeidisSfakianos
@AristeidisSfakianos 2 күн бұрын
I have immense respect for photojournalists. In many ways, I often think of photojournalism as the ultimate direction this channel could take. But I’m not there yet-maybe someday, who knows? What you said about preaching really resonates with me. When I started shaping the voice of this channel, it became clear that I wanted to share my story, not tell others what they should do. Some of what I’ve experienced might resonate with people, and some might not-and that’s perfectly okay. Equally important to me is learning from the people I connect with through KZbin, not just sharing my perspective. This balance is essential to what I’m trying to create. Together, these principles have shaped a style that I feel best represents who I am. And I am very glad that my message is now reaching the right people! Thank you so much for watching and for all the support!

Photos well illustrate your points. 50mm used to be the fl for 35mm film camera kit lenses. 50 is a good measure of what fl to try next - tele if you crop most of the 50mm images, wide if you find yourself moving back to get the composition. Next up suggestion: 35mm (full frame equivalent). Happy New Year, Aris!

I am very happy you think so Paul! I think you put it down really well here. Indeed 50mm fl is the right spot to be a way of measuring the right fl for a certain scene. Fab images and video Aris. When I bought my 50mm f1.8 lens it stayed on my camera for years and went around the world with me. It was too good to take off. Despite the resistance for change I eventually got an 85mm. However the 50 always has a special place in my photography. Without it a lot of my shots would have not occurred or would have been mediocre with the kit lens.

Hi, i enjoy seeing your videos. I am daily using a Sony A7 IV + 3 lenses from 17mm to 180mm + filters and tripod ! Had enough to wear this weight and not to be able to carry a camera all the time. Sold my second A7IV and bought the Gr3x with the nisi kit... So happy ! i miss sometimes to change the focal length but the Ricoh is so convenient and powerful that i can deal with it! Regarding the autofocus.. Well i use snap or touch screen AF+shutter : works pretty fine.

Another great video Aristeidis! Thank you very much for your thoughts and insights on this. Over the years I have realised that you learn more about your craft and yourself with limitations. Although currently I have both zoom and prime lenses what changed my photography journey was a fixed 35mm lens (EOS M system, now discontinued) and then Fuji X100F. Not giving yourself all the options (on gear level) makes yourself uncomfortable and creative. Many thanks again, stay creative! Καλές γιορτές να έχεις και εσύ και η οικογένεια σου!

Thank you Aristeidis, great content. (1) I have never used Instagram nor Facebook; best two decisions that I ever made! (2) I have learned that I need a plan about my photo shoot; never just walk out the front door and hope. (3) As much as possible, I need to slow down and be more intentional; using manual focus is a big help to me. (4) I take a second camera with me, an older model setup only for B&W. I start with B&W photography to get my mojo going. (5) I always try different styles, as I try to define my exact style. (6) Printing is important. I make different types of photobooks. I always make one book of my favourite photographs for the year. I compare my previous books to see if my photographs have improved.

Best humble (I’m n expert, more a student) best advice have found is to have one or two themes (aka projects) to focus your own view of what and how to watch for. Also, I’ve found myself saying ok, “theme autumn” as a reaction to needing a direction then funnily enough, once with the theme it changes the shape of photos taken because the project means thinking above the photo level and introduces questions of “how can I best represent …..” , “what makes …” etc So then I think outside the general and “how would I say …” whatever the theme is.
@AristeidisSfakianos
@AristeidisSfakianos 9 күн бұрын
I love this approach! Having a theme or project to focus on really helps direct your vision and can transform the way you see everything around you. I do have the same with my fog project. Although it is quite general it has given me a platform to help me focus and create something that expresses me. Having a project, is such a great way to approach photography and to keep it fresh! I use a Fuji x-e2 with pancake lenses. The unexpected benefit was that people feel much more relaxed than when a big camera is pointed at them- so the pictures feel more personal and natural
@AristeidisSfakianos
@AristeidisSfakianos 9 күн бұрын
That’s a great point! I’ve heard that before as well-the smaller, more discreet cameras like the Fuji X-E2 definitely have a way of making people feel more relaxed, which can lead to more natural, personal shots. But it really depends on who you're photographing. Some people are totally comfortable with a bigger kit, while others might feel a little intimidated. It’s all about reading the situation and finding what works best for the moment! Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊📸

My advice about what's a good photo or not (to the ones who care to listen) is: ONLY TRUST YOURSELF!!
@AristeidisSfakianos
@AristeidisSfakianos 9 күн бұрын
I love that, Stefan! It’s so true-trusting yourself is something not everyone has, but it’s such a powerful and essential trait, especially in photography. At the end of the day, you’re the one behind the camera, and your vision is what truly matters. It’s the key to creating photos that speak to you, not just what others think is "good." Thanks for sharing that wisdom! 🙌📸

For me one of the biggest things was just shooting for myself, at the end of the day I have like 2k followers so who cares 😅, they bring joy and memories to future me. Film also helped me stop obsessing about gear & editing since they’re imperfect by-design.

Shooting for yourself is such a freeing mindset! And honestly, it’s the joy and memories that matter most. Film really does help shift that focus away from gear and editing. I am trying it for myself now and it does give photography a different soul! The imperfections make the process feel more real and personal. It’s amazing how much we can learn by just embracing the journey and enjoying what we create. Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊📸
