Do you know if they still let you choose your own seats or are they assigned now?
@greattrainadventure8523

@@mikkitikki1992 Assigned seating seems to be getting more popular on Amtrak, but it’s hard to predict, on more popular routes it is typical you will be assigned a seat, this sucks considering some are better than others.

I used to live in Hartsville, South Carolina which is not far from Florence. And yes, I used to be one of those early teenage rail fans who enjoyed watching the Palmetto come and go. My first ride on Amtrak was on the northbound edition of the Palmetto, train 90 from Savannah to Florence, in April 1985. That Amfleet II coach felt like first class. I currently live in Japan which is 13/14 time zones ahead, but hope to ride #89 on the exact same route you took.

@@TrainGuy3001 I haven’t been there in a long time. But every day is different. If you want guaranteed action be there from like 8-10:30, you’ll see some yard action and an Amtrak. Maybe a mixed freight or two. Evenings aren’t bad either, I have a few other videos about the diamond. I wouldn’t recommend going late at night, the area is somewhat industrial and it’s not super safe at night, but nothing to be worried about. If you want to do some night Railfanning, go to the Amtrak station in North Charleston, bright LED’s light up the tracks. If I’m not mistaken they still let the general public on the platform.

My first Amtrak ride is tomorrow!! Can’t wait! I’m stoked. I’ll be riding the Palmetto from Florence SC to Wilson. A layover there. From there, I’ll be on the Carolinian from Wilson to Greensboro. After that, I’ll hit a layover where I’ll spend a couple of hours lounging around the station(I might Uber to get some food). From there, I’ll be aboard the Crescent until I get to ATL. I’ll take a Groom Bus from there to Chattanooga(home). Of all things, I ended up stranded after my car(liability/no rental provided) was hit by a drunk driver Christmas Eve while I was getting pizza for the celebration. I was gonna fly, but the Railfan in me said “Why be boring and fly, when you could actually have fun?". And so, I'll be setting off at 11:00am tomorrow.

As someone who has traveled on the Amtrak line from the age of 5, I very distinctly remember the old Charleston Train Station. It creeped me out but also intrigued me because it looked so historical and ancient. While I am bummed its gone, the memories are still there, and it makes me happy to see that we have a new station. Now I just need to get back on the train cause the last time I got on one was in 2019. Supposed to have gone in 2021 but my mother passed away so unexpectedly the trip got cancelled.

Do you have to stay in your coach seat the entire time? Did you get up and go to a view car with big windows? Was that attached to the train?
@greattrainadventure8523
@greattrainadventure8523 Жыл бұрын
You don’t have to stay in your seat/car the entire time. Only the double decker trains typically have those observation viewing cars, the Cardinal only has coaches, a Cafe; and sleepers but you can move to the cafe for a nice table to sit at for a while.

What station are you boring the train at? If you are getting on in Charleston it is VERY likely you will have a new viewiner, any point before Savannah it’s 50/50, I believe they board the viewliners front to back. Usually in CHS you get in the last one, which is a new one.

I got family down along that line! One of my cousins lives in Goose Creek, and my maternal grandmother lived in an apartment right up the block from the tracks when I was little (my uncle owned the family estate just out of town until he and my mom sold it years ago). Whenever we visited Grandma, every time we heard a train horn blow, we’d all blast out the apartment door and book it to the corner so we could watch the train go by. Freight train, passenger train, it didn’t matter-we HAD to watch the train! To this day, I still love watching them, and living in a county in western Maryland where the county seat is a major railroad hub just makes it even more fun!
