I'm almost zero in japanese (only from anime probably on or 2 words) , but during my trip last year to Osaka,Kobe,Kyoto,Tokyo,Murodo and Nara I have no problem. Many road sign already in English, and people knew basic English even when our trip to Murodo where we have to pass through small village station form Toyama , it's great experience and the people (The master station probably) even take us to the next train when we didn't know that there was a train exchange

I don't like Japanese people at all. With their forced smiles, it makes me angered. When we try to be friendly, when we try to get to know them, they suddenly abandon us by “ghosting” us. They refuse to say their honesty, they impose their tatemae on us. They think they avoid conflicts, but they are wrong. Japan is not the right place to meet people. and learning Japanese means having brain pain

I'm coming to Japan for the first next month and will stay till 1st of November. But It was very important to me, that I'm able to communicate at least a little with the local people, so I started taking japanese classes back in January and I will continue the course after I'm going back. It was for me also a way of showing respect toward Japan and its people, that I'm able to speak their language.

こんにちは、祐介さん ! I am on my 3rd day of learning Japanese and so far it's going well. (Also bc i am german) I think from all of the videos i have watched about foreigners coming to Japan is that. 1. It is important to know at lease some basic Japanese to help both sides & 2. It deepens your connections with them other than using Translate. 3. Those who don't want to learn are just Winging it and hoping for the best / Excuses saying they have no time (To learn). I'll be following you! My life here in America changed abruptly and the feelings towards my country have left me. USA is almost like communist Russia & I am getting to that age where i need to start to settle down and figure out the future plan. Danke Schön! for posting.

It's funny. I'm an American who can't really speak any Japanese at all, yet I feel far more comfortable and confident traveling in Japan than I would probably feel traveling in England or New Zealand. Well I can recognize a few critical kanji and sometimes parse out katakana, and the safety factor has something to do with it, but the biggest thing is that Japanese people look at me and EXPECT me to be ignorant. I'd feel like a real idiot doing anything wrong in an English-speaking country, but don't have to worry about that in Japan. I guess there is even a term for it: "gaijin pass."

You don't seem to understand the concept of a lingua franca, that is a language that is spoken over many different areas. This has occurred over time, and is due to economic, military, and cultural dominance. (In this era, think of movies and television shows, pop music, and things like science and tech advancement that has propelled English to dominance.) There are localized lingua francas, such as Swahili over some areas in Africa, and Hindi as a unifying language in India. In the ancient, Mediterranean world koine Greek, was the lingua franca, not Latin. (BTW, koine Greek is the language of the New Testament).

That's great and all. As a Singaporean Chinese, who can speak a little in Japanese (which I find extremely rare from where I live), I would strongly advise anyone, who plans to visit Japan to learn as least some basic japanese words/phrases. I guarantee you that the locals would much appreciate it and save you a lot of hassle getting around.

This is just not true dude. They are wildly xenophobic and there is a lot of racism. People are barred from bars and restaurants because of their race (they claim its just foreigners which is bad enough but it's not just that because locals who have different skin or are mixed are excluded too). Foreigners often struggle to get jobs and mixed race couples are looked down upon. If you dont believe the thousnands of foreigners who have lived there and reported it, and the Japanese people who report it, it's been widely documented online too
