I’ve been listening to him since he dropped ‘Fool’ and I was delightfully shocked when ‘Candy’ dropped. The way he was able to bend and blend so many genres from country to 80s synth pop to 90’s r&b, and create that musical soundscape he did on that album is just mind-blowing. I really think those ‘Absolutely’ sessions had a huge influence on how he went about this album. There’s some similarly disruptive about those two albums that i absolutely admire

SOO GLAD UR TALKING ABT HIM!! He's so quickly become my favorite artist after one of his songs came up on my discover shuffle, usually I just play music in the background of my day to day tasks but I had to pause and do a deep dive into his stuff after hearing Alesis. I saw one review of his music saying there were a lot of imperfections to the album's sound but I think that's what really makes his studio albums stand out so much to me, NOT TO MENTION HIS LIVE PREFORMANCES WOW.

I think what makes an artist really hit is their relevance to the cultural moment. I think mk.gee is tuning into exactly what people want to see and hear from a musician. Hes returning to the mythical and cryptic rockstar archetype. He's giving instrumental expressiveness and experimentation the spotlight, which is in some ways feeling rare nowadays in pop. He also appeals to that counter culter feel. That album is angsty in a way that feels authentic. Sort of reminds me of kurt kobain's stage presence and give-no-shits attitude. This is also reflected in the fact that he keeps his highly praised live recordings off of major streaming platforms besides youtube. It both seems like a jab at spotify and a lack of desperation from him. Hes not clamoring to give fans what they are begging for in all his comment sections. Hes not just approaching the songwriting in a refreshing way, hes changing up how artists deal with fame in the modern day. So yeah I too am obsessed lol. I think he appeals to aspiring artists like myself because he shows a career path where you can somewhat play by your own rules, and find success by making simple changes to the established formula. Ok I'm not done. This is where I really yap. I think what's also interesting is a comment he made in that interview audio, where he says 2 star is supposed to feel like a warped 80s album, or something along those lines. That genre or asthetic is immediately apparent, and I think it's hitting a lot of Gen z-er aspiring artists very hard, for a very specific reason. A strange shared generational experience we have is being fed 80s nostalgia media constantly. It's in our TV shows, movies, music, games. By the hand of corporations looking to farm our parents, we all became obsessed. Look how awesome Stranger Things is! Thor's new movie is sooo 80s! Guardians of the Galaxy is sooo 80s! You love the 80s! And while we thought it was cool on a surface level, there was an uncanny shallowness to it. I think it unsettled us deep down. We are being shown the glory of an era we didn't get to live through. Like hey, sorry you missed the party, but we had a LOT of fun back in the day. Have fun dealing with the financial and systemic aftermath! And so there's something melancholic at the heart of nostalgiac media for pretty much every age group, as together we traverse dark and unfulfilling times. Pacifying ourselves on echoes of the past. Okay I'm getting a little corny. But I think mk.gee taps straight into that emotion we barely ever perceive but intensely feel. And his lyrics reflect this too. His most famous song "Are You Looking Up" seems to be about someone in search of purpose, mourning wasted time and waiting for a guiding light to pull them out of confusion. Songs like Candy to me seem like a commentary on disassociation, with recurring lyrics about fantasizing and wasting time in dysfunctional relationships. This theme about a lost generation is just hitting so hard nowadays for gen z, after so many of our societal structures and culture are at best questionable. Though this issue can be applied to many places, it feels like a distinctly American problem, which I think mkgee also taps into by alluding to classic american rock, indie and r&b subgenres, like grunge. So yeah long story short, I think this dude might be onto something lol.

another artist I see giving props is John Mayer. He follows him on ig and likes a ton of his posts. I know that's not necessarily a ton to go off of but a guitarist of his caliber has had mk.gee on his radar. His genius is currently in the phase of "if you know you know" but he's been getting the recognition he deserves.
