I had the pleasure of hearing this cantata in January this year at the Bach Academy in Brugge, same crew (Collegium Vocale Gent, Philippe Herreweghe). This opening choir is fabulous. One of the open rehearsals began with the 3 altos alone (one of them Alex Potter) singing their first 11 bars. I have hardly ever heard such a clean and perfect sound. A little later, Herreweghe referred to Mr Potter as the best counter tenor of all times - he should definitely used that in his CV :-)
Going again in January, can’t wait !

You still retiring this channel? I didn't see any Zelenka-esque hidden gems from the 17th Century like Bassani Op. 5. no 1. I. , Bassani Op. 5. no 2. II. , Merula, Capriccio Chromatico, or Legrenzi Op 2. No 1.

My remarks: Omnes generationes: Apparently "omnes, omnes generations" is stated as many times as there are generations between Abraham and Jesus. Quia fecit: One of the finest pieces of 2-part counterpoint. Et misericordia: Bar 31 is so weird, man! Suscepit Israel: tonus peregrinus in the oboe part. Sicut locutus: Great subject and countersubject, majestic homophony(?) at 24:30.

Very... Wagnerian - at times. Honestly, I'd be a much greater fan of early-mid Romanticism if it was all performed Gould-like.

Chopin's Sonata No. 1 is rarely recorded. It was a composition practice. Sonata No. 2 is often recorded. I understand that this was a failure. The reason is that the motifs in the fourth movement and other pieces could not be developed at all. Although the same musical form continues like perpetual motion like the Tempest Sonata, it was not in the form of a Rondo Sonata. It was immature. In that respect, Sonata No. 3 is a work worthy of being listed as a masterpiece of Romantic piano sonatas. It is a work that is comparable to Schumann's Fantaisie. Liszt's Piano Sonata. The fact that Gould has not recorded any other works of Chopin's except this sonata means that he admired Chopin's high level of compositional technique from the perspective of a composer. The fact that the broadcast recording was left on CBC can be considered a gift from him to us. I am very happy to be able to listen to it like this.

How did Ferruccio Busoni actually use the synthetic scales he wrote about in his "Sketch for a New Esthetic of Music"? I listened to Busoni's late works like Fantasia Contrappuntistica, Sonatina no. 2 and Toccata, for example, and I couldn't find any analysis of how Busoni's synthetic scales are used in context.
