They are poles apart in their execution, the type R has a hand built all aluminium engine based on a high reving race car engine with all the power up top, with fantastic flow characteristics from the cylinder head design, to cope with the VTEC system. The VR6 was designed as a Diesel V6 in the early 80s, then resigned to be a petrol in 89 and fitted to the passat and corrado but retaining the cast iron block, it relies on capacity and cylinder count to give power and torque, the VR6 is weak point is its unique cylinder head, in the fact it has very poor flow quality and doesn't respond very well to tuning, unlike the K20 that responds brilliantly to simple tuning methods, also the VR6 was originally for a autobahn crusier and not a sports application. The K20 makes more power than the VR6 from the factory, 197bhp vs 174bhp, so the VR6 is already 23hp down, the 2.9 VR6 only made 188bhp, which is still less than the K20 but there is literally 30 years in age between these engines..for a comparison the E36 BMW 2.8, 6 cylinder made 190bhp, so the VR6 was making about the right 6 cylinder power of the time.

Do not compare the incomparable, a m3 of 321hp against one of 212hp ... while here the car in question has practically the same power, and the guy from the BMW is all alone, while in the honda we are at 2....

Don't forget the Honda ATR is a stripped out light weight version of the Accord...if you give the 325i the same lightweight treatment it will get closer
