One of the best seasons by a point guard in NBA history. WAY more than just your typical 3rd team ALL NBA season. If it weren’t for Russ having possibly the best PG season ever, and Harden nearly having an even better PG season than Russ! Wall put together what was easily a first team all nba level performance. But what other guards made it above him? Reigning 2 time MVP Stephen Curry in the smack dab middle of his prime scoring 26 a game shooting over 40 from 3 on 10 attempts per game, and Isaiah Thomas’ 29 ppg season for the Celtics. That has got to be the most insane point guard season in NBA history. There were so many guards who didn’t even make ALL-NBA. That season, just making 3rd team was considered an insane accomplishment. Wall was 7th in MVP voting in the entire league, yes on the WIZ! And only managed to crack 3rd team. To be honest, I think a lot of voters would have moved him up to 2nd team if they had been allowed to vote after the playoffs because Wall actually had the best individual postseason out of the 5 I named, possibly behind Curry if you want to give him the nod for winning the title. But what wall did during the playoffs, after becoming the first regular season player ever with 1800 points 800 asssifs 150 steals and 50 blocks, was have the only 27+ point 10+ assist 1.7+ steal and 1.2+ block playoff run EVER. In fact, he’s the only player ever to average at least 27 points and 10 assists for a playoff run that lasted longer than 1 series. One other player did it for 7 games. Wall did it for a playoff run of 13 games. Wall also broke Jordans record of consecutive playoff games tallying at least 20 points and 7 assists. Jordan had done it 9 times. Wall ended up pushing the streak to 11. Wall also joined MJ and LBJ in history when he tallied 42 points and 8 assists while eliminating Atlanta IN Atlanta. Those 3 are the only players to ever have done that in the road. Wall ALSO( I know I know lol) had 40, 13, 3 blocks and 3 steals in game 2 vs Boston. Only player ever to do that in the playoffs as of 2017. And I think maybe the most memorable moment was when he scored 23 points in the second half of game 6, trialing Boston 3 games to 2, and still found his team trailing by 2 with 5 seconds left. Wall would catch the inbounds, call off the play, and rise up over Avery Bradley for the most clutch shot we’ve seen since Ray Allen. I’ve searched and I cannot find another made 3 pointer that literally saved a season. Down 2. Miss and game is over. But wall made it with 2 seconds left , and gave the Wizards a 1 point in a true do or die moment. It was TECHNICALLY more CLUTCH than Kawhis corner 3( tie game. Miss and go to OT) or Kyries shot( tie game. And there was still a minute left!). Some other players have made game winning and buzzer beater shots in the playoffs since then, but I haven’t found a single shot that packed as much win or go home pressure as Walls series extending 3. Mind you, even Walls biggest haters or typically naysaying critics such as Skip and Max Kellerman, they were ALL praising him to extremely high levels during this playoff run. I shiz you not, during this run ESPn was having segments where SAS and Max were actually agreeing in the saying that John Wall has proven he is the #2 player in the entire eastern conference behind Bron, and they even said since they don’t consider Curry a real point guard, they would argue Wall is the best point guard in the entire league, over MVP and first team all nba players At the time Westbrook, and Harden. Wow. It may have been the only reason where he was able to really touch on his true potential, but John Walls entire 2016/17 season is again, easily one of the tip top Point Guard seasons EVER. Stats, winning, leading, not having tons of help, cltuch shots, AND doing it in the regular season AND postseason! I feel like that is the rarest part. Even when we look at the greats, a lot of them had their best regular season different years than their best postseason. Sure they were awesome in the reg and post like every year. But not typical to be at their very BESt in both. Even Brons 2018. The second half of his reg was amazinf, but overall it wasn’t close to his best regular season. Wall had a historic and one of a kind regular season, and a historic record setting post season. And he had the wizards WINNING! Even in the game 7 they lost, he had given them a lead by the 3rd qtr but was so exhausted the coach admitted to ruining the game having no bench and having to refuse walls request for a little rest at the end of the 3rd. The wizards lost the game by like 9, but their bench was outscored 44-5. 44. To 5. That was also consistent with the rest of the series, as Wall led the wizards to 4 double digit leads in the first two games, but would end up losing both as whenever he would rest the Celtics would inevitably go on a run until he would return. He had the wizards up 16-0 in game 1 and I believe 15 in the 1st qtr of game 2, mind you in that first qtr he produced 19 points and 6 assists lol! In a playoff game! In the garden! Lol. Wall ALSO led the wizards to their best season /wins since 1979. This was one of 3 seasons between 2014-2017 where he led the wizards to their 3 most successful seasons they’ve had since they won that title. In 2017 they won a franchise record 17 games in a row at home. They also had the best final regular season record ever after starting a season as poorly as 6-12. Best finish ever after such a poor start. Also, don’t forget Wall led the wizards to 5 straight seasons at .500 or better, and 4 of those 5 playoff trips, and since he was been out of the lineup they are yet to touch .500 even once. In 2019 espn did a study trying to highlight Anthony Davis’ dominance despite his lack of elite support from the franchise. They attributed points to teammates, coaches and execs for every official accolade they received during those seasons, such as all star,ROY, COTY. Well, it showed that AD was #1 all time for how much winning he had done, how far he had made it in the playoffs, with the least amount of help. He ended up being tied with 1 playoff though, John Wall, and the only difference was that Wall had done what AD did once, 3 times 😂 I know I’m being ridiculous but I could go on and on. To me, so many people WANT to have opinons, but what’s the point in having a take if you don’t have the data and scienctific approach to prove you are right? You’d rather just spew some narratives crafted by people in the media like SAS who have clear vendettas agaisnr some players? Not me. Wall is a top 10-15 player at the point guard position we have ever seen. And everything that we can use to try and actually prove that, things in his control, add up.
