Regarding running bash scripts and untrusted bash scripts, I always take a Btrfs snapshot before I update my system or install anything or run any untrusted scripts. Making that a strong habit has saved my butt on a number of occasions. Only takes about a minute to do a Btrfs rollback. I luv the Btrfs tools built into Tumbleweed and how using Btrfs snapshots gives me a lot of peace of mind when I mess around with my system. Thanks for the great info and I luv the timestamps you included.

Really disappointed how none of the panel actually took the time to read the user guide, since many items they talked about were clearly covered in the guide. This is a common problem with smart people, they assume they understand how something works without taking the effort to see if there is a BETTER way to do things. This is the point of the user guide. Same with available applications, both native and ported. Eg no video editor (they have Medo which does 4K videos, 3D animated text, all in 1.4Mb (mega, not giga), they have OpenShot), no Telegram, no Firefox, no editors, etc. It's honestly a poor panel where the guests didn't do their homework, and you can clearly see that they struggled to talk since they were indifferent and not informed. Maybe by the next Beta the panel will actually take the time to read the manual, and spend more than 5 minutes *playing* with the OS.

Nobody knocked on it. I rather enjoyed it. I spent a few hours poking around and I have kept this around to continue to poke around at it. I do like these unique distributions but that is because I like to keep old hardware operational. Haiku is truly wonderful. I am sorry if the panel didn't reflect my personal excitement for it.

Man Ricki definitely needs a better microphone. He sounds far too nasal, like he's talking through a boosted 1980 telephone.

The microphone is fine, he just needs to turn down the gain. I just turn down the volume when he speaks, not a big deal. When you have a room with multiple people, there will ALWAYS be differences in mic volume and quality.

Buy a smart watch and spend hours to make it even work🤔 Nuts! They look ugly, to expensive, to big, useless. I feel naked without my trusted analog quartz watch, that just keeps on ticking with a new battery every 2 or even 3 years. Cost me 80 euro's and has never let me down. It's more than 10 years old, but like I said, it just keeps on ticking. I don't use Twitter. It's a cesspool.

Hi Eric, I have done the same thing. A couple of years ago, I helped Mum buy a new iPhone, I advised a 14 Plus. After her death, I needed a phone to use my now available Libre Sense 2 Glucose meters. Once in the iPhone ecosystem, I started to wonder about a watch. I also got my wife a Samsung watch for a present. So I bought a Hard Had watch for $120 AU (5 dollars American) and have been trying it out before I sell a kidney and liver. I need to measure the biometrics of the Hard Hat with actual medical equipment next time I am at my chronic disease appointment.

Type in my password and I'm good to go. Smart watch I don't like nor see the need for it. Quartz Rolex look a like. Every 2 years and sometimes even more, new battery and it keeps on ticking.

I hopped from Firefox browser to Brave browser because Firefox stutters and freezes on Viaplay when I watch soccer and when it freezes it replays the same part when it froze. No such issues on Brave and Brave uses a lot less memory than Firefox because it pauses tabs when not used for a while. No extension needed because Brave has a setting for it in settings. I feel like a traitor though because I've a Firefox user since version 1.

Linux needs more helper scripts for novices. Just a few prompts with suggestions to get the network up. So much in Linux has transitioned to auto-generation and all the config files are essentially hidden or have strong wording against manual changes. The other problem is that some distros don't even ship with network tools installed by default. Hard to install if your network is down.

Your news reel is a little dated. The vending machine was a while ago. They were trying to gather demographics to better stock the machines, but seems silly given the college environment they were put into. As I understood the Ars article, Google had already made changes to their ad business and the government was just after damages. Makes sense to avoid a lengthy damages trial by paying the estimated damages ahead of time.

I pay for the premium, and it happened to me on the Roku YT app. If they are doing this because of an ad blocker when I am paying for the premium this is horrendous. Is there any line these mega corps wont cross to shove ads down our throats? We can't even pay to be left alone anymore...

DJ Ware did an EXTREMELY detailed comparison of the popular file systems, including BTRFS. This included many different types of disk reading scenarios. Speed wise, BTRFS is slow- often half the speed of the others. And it can still have bizarre errors if not set up properly. Snapshots are cool, but I'd much rather use good 'ol ext4 and make frequent backups of irreplaceable files and just clone the system to an extra disk or at least make regular compressed full images. BTRFS was designed for enterprise systems and is overly complex and slow for personal computers. But, very recently BTRFS got a round of performance related tweaks, so I'm actually going to give it a try just to see. I think it would be best to try it on a distro where it is the default- Fedora is supposed to have the vest implementation of it.

I was late. But the reason I would vote Mint is because it is my belief the new user should never have to see the command line. I installed Ubuntu Noble in a VM, and the first thing I did was try to update through the software center and got an error. I have had that updater crash on me and break too many times. Never had that happen in Mint. Its GUI just works. I agree, the snap vs flatpak war is stupid. But I prefer flatpak for desktop. Maybe snaps are great on server side, but I get mixed results on desktop. Ubuntu is great. They build a great foundation. Their repos are huge. Its compatibility is second to none. Ubuntu has to focus on the corporate side of things to make money to build the great foundation. I say Ubuntu takes it to corporate. But Mint brings it home. The Mint community is always willing to help the new user. I wish the 2 distros would get a long better. They both bring something to the table the other does not. Just let Ubuntu handle corporate side. And let Mint handle the desktop side. They bring it home in a way Ubuntu cannot. Bringing the best parts of Ubuntu refined to perfection in the cleanest presentation I have ever seen. Long story short, I love what Ubuntu does. I want them to continue to succeed. But there is only one distro I would give my grandma. And thats Mint.
