Very nice video. Can you upload a video in which you show calculation of DE CMC in excel. As it is very complicated to understand here. Also can you please throw some light on Adjusted Values? Xrite has adjusted values for all things. 3NH doesnot have adjusted values for any. Can you teach us how to calculate adjusted values mainly for L A B and DECMC?

Does this lesson apply to gemstones too? I’m in school for gemology and we’re talking about different color scales for grading and appraisal of gems. And I have never learned about this before so I’m a total new student to these color equations and I’m genuinely curious if this also applies to that? Thank you for any help at all!!!

Hi Josh, from what I could find about Gemstone color grading, a visual analysis is performed based on hue, tone, and saturation. Typically, gemstones are not measured using spectrophotometers but as actually visually compared to charts of known colors references specifically made for gemstones. The scale and equation system mentioned in this presentation is very different than the traditional gemstone color grading, but you could theoretically apply CIE color space to gemstones and measure them with spectrophotometers.

Why did the CIE develop all these delta E equations to account for the non-uniformity of CIELAB, instead of just developing a more perceptually uniform color space. It's like constantly trying to polish a turd. The larger concerns should be that CIELAB is based upon tristimulus values (of which isn't a direct representation of cone responses).

Data is stored in a database format in smart-chart. It can be exported to Excel or csv file format. If stored directly on instrument it can be transfer via LAN, USB or USB stick.

Hi Amye! Ford cups are a simple way to QC relatively low viscosity liquids such as oils. They are simpler to use and cost less than a rotational viscometer, although rotational viscometers do typically provide more precise measurement results, so the best option would depend on your individual needs.

Ford cups are assigned a K and C value depending on which number cup it is. To calculate viscosity these constants, along with the efflux time in seconds, are entered into the following equation to calculate kinematic viscosity: Centistokes = (K*efflux time) - (C/efflux time) Multiply this value by the specific gravity of the fluid being tested to convert the reading to centipoise (dynamic viscosity).

Each Ford Cup comes with two constant values, K and C. A No. 2 cup has values of K=1.24 and C=770. A No. 3 cup has values of K=2.31 and C=550. A No. 4 cup has values of K=3.7 and C=400. Centistokes = K*efflux time(secs) - (C/efflux time). To convert Centistokes to Centipoise multiply by the specific gravity of the material.

@rickyrosan The two cups are both used for the same types of materials. The Zahn type cups are used more in a manufacturing environment where they are often dipped through the bung hole in a drum of material or into a tank of paint. Ford cups are used in a lab where conditions are more easily controlled.
