This is a typical specious argument by a linguist. The underlying message is political rather than factual or educational. She claims that the rules were modeled on the wealthy, the aristocracy. Yes, that is true, because the wealthy were primarily the educated class; therefore, rules were modeled by people who were educated, and logically not by the uneducated who spoke in a dialect. She is a descriptivist; she doesn't make judgments on people's language; therefore, she uses the term lower-class speech as a euphemism for incorrect speech or bad grammar. It follows the argument that linguists constantly purport that language doesn't deteriorate, it evolves, which is another specious position based on the fact that language does evolve, but in what direction and is the evolvement a meglioration of language or is it in retrogression.

We didn’t civilise, we acted with utter incivility, terrorising populations around the world and lining our pockets with the fruits of their labour and natural resources. If that’s civilising then it’s dreadful and not something to be proud of.

There is a certain something called the white mans burdon, it says that the white man has the task to civilize the lesser people, thorugh erasing their culture. This was used to justify the ramlemt imperialism. I do believe history is history and no one should be ashamed of it or owes anything to anyone, but we should learn from history for the future of man kind, not fall for the same propaganda our ancestors did

Fun fact did you know when the French colonise AlgeriaIn 1830 they were actually surprised bye the widespread level of high literacy between the people there, which is probably more higher than France at that time. Another fun fact is a lot of the Greek classics are actually only survived because of they have been translated to Arabic then move to Europe when they translated later to their native languages so a lot of people consider to be renaissance age European are actually from various sources, Indian Persian Chinese, and Arabic this idea about European age of alignment being some sort of an exclusively European thing is completely false. People in Europe just didn’t decide they want to make science 500 years ago.

That’s probably one of the stupidest argument I have ever heard well yeah we did some bad but we also did some good so stop hitting yourself well that’s not the point yeah Western countries has counted a lot to human advancement but that does mean to forget that many many negative aspect to that and also when you say civilise what do you mean exactly by that what is the standard of civilisation exactly? And who decide what is civilised and what is not the dude with the biggest gun? that mention this kind of narrative is completely false European didn’t just show up to Africa and start building schools and hospital yes they were to technologically superior but they use this technology to subjugate extract the natural resources of those countries which help in European development did you ever Wonder why Africa is so poor and Western Europe is so developed well 150 years of colonialism will do that to your country this concept of colonialism wasn’t actually that bad in fact they have to thank us for it is so outdated. You seem like a nice guy. Please learn more.

You've got to use examples man. Not once in education were we taught about the empire the closest we got was ww1 which was entirely European focused. And we had a module in citizenship which instilled 'british values'. This is just recycled American talking points which aren't applicable to the UK. By enlarge the media isn't concerned with rethinking the history of empire. Most news outlets are right wing or aren't commentary based like channel 4 or the BBC so wouldn't bring it up. You could have done the bare minimum and dredged up a guardian headline nobody's read rather than just a lazy copy paste of a ben shapiro vid with 'America' replaced with 'Britain'
@ColCamBro
@ColCamBro 13 күн бұрын
It's a clip from a 70 minute podcast. Beyond that, we can safely assume I don't agree with your take that the media is right wing? Channel 4 are actively left wing, while the BBC is fully bought into the anti west narrative. There is reduced patriotism in the idea of being British. That's pushed by a leftist education system and hangwringing media.

As someone who lives in a van right now, and previously lived on a boat, I think Rory is missing something with his trailer park idea... You still have to pay for a place to put your mobile living solution. Whether it's a space in a field, or a dock in a marina, you're not getting a free pass by having some self-contained housing solution. You still have to pay for the privilege of being there.
@ColCamBro
@ColCamBro Ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing, Chris - glad Rory's ideas have got us considering it and you're able to share the practical element. Do you prefer land or water?!
@chrisgraythereal
@chrisgraythereal Ай бұрын
Well both are expensive! A van is cheaper to run than a boat if you're not actually travelling around in it, but as soon as you start doing nomad stuff there's a whole mess of complications to consider. And the world is not set up for people who don't have a fixed address. Banking, insurance, licenses, access to services, it can all be hard. Not to mention basics like where do you poop! Then there's the issue of popularity, or surges. If everyone feels free to move to anywhere then everywhere nice quickly fills up with nomad vehicles. I was in Tenerife this winter, finding a decent spot was hard. Too many nomads escaping the northern winter! A campsite in the UK will cost anything from 20 to 70 pounds a night to park, and planning permission usually restricts visitors to one month maximum. Allowing long-term stays would enable sites to maintain a steady income during winter, but councils usually oppose the idea. Mooring a boat in my nearest marina runs about 400euro or more per metre of boat length for the summer season. 10-12 metres is normal for a liveaboard, so minimum 4 grand in rent for six months over and above the cost of the boat. It's cheaper in winter, but you'd probably want to go somewhere warmer and less rainy, joining the migratory herd that pushes up prices wherever you go. If you can find a spot, you can anchor a boat away from a marina. But then you're totally off grid and need a dingy to get to shore. Where do you put it when you get to the beach? How do you get from the beach to Sainsbury's? And what do you do when the inevitable storm comes? You are much more "in" your environment living on a boat, attuned to tides and weather, you can't ever leave it for more than a few hours. Next time it's pissing down with rain and you're looking out the window, imagine if your total floorspace was 50 or 80 square feet and you barely had room to stretch your arms out. And going outside meant stepping into a puddle of mud. No washing machine, no shower, maybe even no toilet without a long walk to the facilities. Nomad life is a lovely romantic idea, and can be a lot of fun for a holiday, even an extended one, but is not a long-term solution for a lot of people. I like Rory, he has a lot of great ideas, but he obviously doesn't have direct experience of this one and I think he's missing a lot of nuance. Fun interview though and it's good to see people daring to speak the heretical truth about property prices. Interesting talk about the hate crime bill and social media generally, btw. I used to do content moderation for Facebook, and wrote a book about it.
@chrisgraythereal
@chrisgraythereal Ай бұрын
I guess the key point is that bad housing is better than no housing. 100k for Rory's theoretical off-grid mobile palace, plus 20k for a bit of land in the middle of nowhere to park it on, is still out of reach for a lot of people. But a converted Luton van in a lay-by is still a place to live, still a modicum of independence and freedom, even if it's not ideal. Changes to the laws and planning regulations would make it a lot easier for people who have few alternatives. But you're up against middle class fears of gypsies and hippies, anyone who's not normal. That's a big lift politically, can't see it happening. I'm in a van right now because I've made a conscious decision to experiment with nomad life for a while. I do pet/house sitting, find jobs with accommodation, so for me it's more of a transport with occasional accommodation than a mobile home. The boat was 25 years ago, thoroughly enjoyable, and I thought about doing it again. But it does work out a lot more expensive and a lot more restrictive than a van. It would be different if I wanted the cruising sailor lifestyle, but I really can't be bothered with the skills development, maintenance and generall faff involved.
@ColCamBro
@ColCamBro Ай бұрын
@@chrisgraythereal Thanks for sharing, Chris - it really doesn't feel likely politically as you say. I think the option for a larger cohort should be made easier, even if not for mass adoption. My personal expectation is for increased home building while also having a greater understanding and grasp of the UK population.
