Power gives way to sail unless your a pissed hire boater then all bets are off

These yachts are about 90 years old, and have been sailed all that time in the Norfolk Broads. They're made of mahogany, and specially designed for the Broads, with shallow keel, low cabin and large, gaff-rigged sails, to catch the wind a bit higher up, where it's less affected by bushes and trees. They're very manouverable: you can spin them round more or less on the spot at slower speeds. Unlike most yachts on the Broads, these particular yachts, from Hunter's Yard, have no engines, and have a quant pole for quanting when there's no wind. Sailing on fairly small rivers may seem strange to those used to the sea, but it's a different kind of sailing, with lots of tacking, frequent changes of direction, variable wind strength depending on trees etc., and in general, using skill and ingenuity to get there by one means or another (and often several, including quanting and manually towing). It's a lot of fun, IMHO, and it's a great place to learn how to handle sailing boats.

This is why I could never have a my own boat on broads the fear of idiots who don't have a clue will come along damage it and drive off like nothing happened.. I know we all have to start some where but some people don't have the right experience or sense to be left in control of large vessel.
