This song is the absolute epitome of the word "bittersweet." (Even more than The Verve with 'Bitter Sweet Symphony') It came out when I was 23, and since then, it's been a permanent part of my '10 Best Songs Ever' list.

If it only stayed at number one a week, it was because it got supplanted by another song Teddy Riley produced. He was a enormous hit machine at that time and that was years before producing all those hits with Michael Jackson.

Guys way too advanced with it. Since the pink cassette release, after years of his fans begging for music, kinda showed me he’s got the game on lock. In his own lane for sure. Most mcs wouldn’t have the granules to spit on 80s synth beats let alone make em sound fire. Work at this level never goes un noticed but it’d be sad if it ain’t til he dies that gets mass recognition.
@Jadco0911 ай бұрын
This song is genius, the fact he doesn’t reveal the girl he’s falling in love with is a prostitute in the first verse, that coupled with her singing the hook throughout is brilliant. Revealing she’s a prostitue in the second verse later saying “called her at work for a word with her, must be a broad (abroad) because my phone bills murder love” which has so many layers to it. This song is one of the best of all times.
@cccbeats_10 ай бұрын
How have I only just caught that "abroad / a broad" wordplay? Holy shit.

FUGEES was not considered commercial when they came out. Only called comm'l in recent times as HIP HOP gained popularity amongst EVERYONE. Similar to R&B now being labeled POP etc...This track came out BEFORE 1989.
