Thank you for such an instructive video! I've been looking at my own attic area and assessing whether and how to install my own ladder, and I see you have a truss design that would keep the area above from being all that useful, what with those cross members being quite prevalent. Were you also going to re-frame truss portions to better open it up? I'd love to see some video about that if so. I don't have trusses myself, so the area in general is quite open to utilizing the already large space, but I have to decide whether cutting 2 joists for the ladder will compromise the existing frame support somehow. There is no good spot to align the ladder in parallel with the joists, and I really, really want to get a ladder in place regardless. Any feedback much appreciated.

I literally had someone taking about the transmission making noise. Had it running on the lift amd pulled everything off and they said that was the noise. I put my head over the hole and the nose stopped and they said I fixed it. Lol. It was a normal noise and the gasket was bad and letting the noise through.

These Louisville ladders suck! Users have a tendency to grab the plywood on the door as they pull down the ladder from the ceiling. Louisville uses Masonite plywood and it will come loose after a few times of operation. Go for the Werner ladder system because it has plywood and the ladder is a little nicer with an aluminum handrail.

Had mine installed for 4.5 years and no issues with the plywood deteriorating. With the height of my ceiling you cannot grab it by the plywood either unless you were extremely tall. Not sure if I would like a handrail or not. Seems like it would get in the way a bit when carrying bulkier items up. But I haven't experienced the difference.

Usually clutches have a release region. It applies pressure then only releaves pressure when the clutch goes all the way back and it's a set amount the clutch system is effectily always pressurized and the spring forces it back and assists on the way down along with built pressure is way pumping your clutch works. As such it would have to me the mechanism or something like a mount moved somewhere mechanical not hydraulic for it to not return.
@thekiltedmechanic1516
@thekiltedmechanic1516 Ай бұрын
Pitting inside a hydraulic cylinder or wear of the piston and bore can cause hanging on spring return. That was not the case in this situation but it is absolutely possible for worn hydraulic components to cause a clutch pedal to not return properly. If moisture gets into your hydraulic fluid it can cause corrosion inside those parts. Also the rubber flexible lines will constrict over time. Narrowing and allowing fluid through under pressure but not allowing fluid to return from the spring in the slave cylinder. Car brakes can suffer similar problems with worn brake hoses. I diagnosed it badly but that doesn't mean my diagnosis was an impossible condition.

It's kinda interesting actually. It's a driveshaft off an 08 Jeep Commander. Truck driveshafts are almost always u-joints for strength thus the reason I called it that. It's definitely not a u joint because it's not needle roller bearings. It is a ball bearing style joint But unlike a CV there's no ability for shaft expansion or contraction at the joint. And the joint doesn't experience nearly the amount of extreme angles that a CV typically does. The ability to transmit power at extreme angles is the CV joint's strength. This joint doesn't need to do that at all.

My father ran a paint and body shop his entire life. I worked part-time during summers and after school. Many of his techniques have changed and improved. For some large crumpled fenders or quarter panels, he might cut out the dent, weld or rivet in a new piece from a new or used fender and continue with the shaping using bond, putty and primed preparation. For the above example of a poorly prepared job, the body repair should also remove the rust and treat the open metal to stop any rust that may remain. I'd needed hammer, pull the metal to the closest level of original shape. Then prime, bond filler, sanding with rough to finer sand paper, putty, sand and prime before painting. New techniques using suction and glue pads with some small hammer tapping sometimes allow pulling of dents out and leveling dents with a minimum of painting if any.

Why do you all make it soooo hard….put the nut back on a few threads, grab 9 and 3, rock side to side while pulling. The wheel comes loose, and nut will keep the wheel from hitting you in the face when it lets go. Your welcome.

Ha! Okay yeah. The basic premise is that if you accept free items given to you then you will become known as someone who takes free things. Then you are more likely to get something of value because people will reach out when they have something to give away. I have a say it's worked for me.

@@thekiltedmechanic1516 Ok makes sense. Just be careful. I was giving my neighbors stuff they acted like they needed only to see them turn around and sell on marketplace and Craigslist. I would’ve done that if they didn’t act like they needed it. I don’t offer even the smallest thing to them anymore. Even if it’s worthless. People suck. Great video by the way. I’m still worried how I’m going to get out of the attic, even with someone helping me but will be pulling the trigger on a Louisville AL2240LG-R5.

As another pointer: Rest the legs of ladder on a stable base to cut on and, if possible, save an hour and use a powered hacksaw cutter(sawmill may not come out clean).
@thekiltedmechanic1516
@thekiltedmechanic1516 6 ай бұрын
For sure. Power tools all the way if you have them. An oscillating multi tool would be much faster for cutting the drywall and a portable bandsaw would be faster for cutting the legs. Didn't have either of those at the time. I do now though and would definitely use them if doing this again.

I just installed and I've got a TINY gap on the attic ladder on the first(highest) fold out. It appears the 2 closest adjustments on the feet don't alleviate it. I can't really add any new holes because they'd walk right into an existing hole. Is a tiny gap ok or is this a no go? Options? Gap is probably about 3/32"
@thekiltedmechanic1516
@thekiltedmechanic1516 8 ай бұрын
Based on how much my ladder flexes when I walk up and down it I'd say a gap like that is not a big concern.

I recommend if anyone is doing the timing chain on your Xterra/Frontier/Pathfinder I would replace the oil galley gasket that is behind the main timing chain. It has been known to cause the low oil pressure at idle that the vq40de as been know for.

Nissan is not the same simple design as the Datsun it was. Too much work. I'm thinking of trading my Frontier with a Tacoma.before I need to do this kind of work. Hopefully Toyota is easier to maintain.

It's a fair amount of work no doubt. But as far as timing chain jobs on dohc vvt style motors go I don't think it's out of the ordinary. I can't speak for everyone's experience but I would bet that some of these failures are due to low oil levels and poor upkeep on oil and filter change schedules.

Attic flooring first or stairs?
@thekiltedmechanic1516
@thekiltedmechanic1516 Жыл бұрын
I didn't install flooring in my attic. I insulated it and then put a couple sheets of OSB down near the stairs for a small amount of storage up there. I will say that the stairs I installed are not large enough to fit a 4x8 sheet of sheathing through. So you may want to remove enough drywall from your ceiling to be able to get full sheets up.
