i bought this radio. wish it had air-marine-vhf-uhf bands but it excels in mostly hf. so one day i might be using it for receiving a cw transmitter. so in one end its only a cw transmitter, receive end is this radio. may be good setup. and it may be good for testing my hf radio reception.

Hey! I recently came upon one of these guys and loved the design factor as well. However, I'm a neophyte when it comes to the repair work. I've checked that the battery pack works (just multimetered continuity to the board and within itself. However, thats kind of where my experience ends. If I could, I could shoot you a couple pictures of the board, which I did remove the chassis from the case and maybe you see something I don't! I didn't see an email listed here, but if you have a public-facing one, let me know! I'd love to get into being able to repair these type of radios.

So I've set this up and it works great but after a while of playing internet radio, it suddenly stops with the message, "Can't connect to server." Switching it on and off resolves the issue until the next time. I've tried connecting it wired and get the same issue. The server I'm using is a relatively new HP Elite Desk 800 G2 with a i5 and 8GB of Ram. It's connected wired and always on. Any ideas?

I think these units actually send and receive FM signals through the air and not through the power lines, like the X10 switch systems. Each of the pots control the carrier frequency of the FM transmitter, which are 200 kHz, 270 kHz and 230 kHz for channels A, B, C respectively.

The power supply maybe bad BUT if you have a older PC with SATA power and data connectors you could get the data off the hard drive maybe ?

If it’s the usb interface board that’s bad then yes.

Backlight in the keys would be a great usability improvement. A stand would allow both a vertical placement of the antenna and a better readability of the LCD screen. I find it hard to read with the radio laying flat on the desk. RDS to help identify FM stations would be very nice. Finally, having Bluetooth audio output would make it unique among portable radios.

I just purchased a Honeywell 4-channel wireless intercom manufactured in 2002 that looks somewhat similar to this. I was wondering how it works because while the guide it came with shows the frequency for each channel, I didn’t see any antennas. I couldn’t find any info online about the unit, but someone on a forum posted that the old Radio Shack intercoms used “powerline communication.” A bit more searching led me to your video. I didn’t know using the electrical system’s wiring to transmit FM was a thing! I don’t think I’ll be opening up the two units I have anytime soon, but I suspect I’ll find a very similar layout with pots and all. Very interesting and informative video. I have an old Radio Shack scanner I may dust off to see how far it transmits. Like most home intercoms, mine is intended to make the ol “time for dinner!” call a little easier when I’m out in the garage/workshop.

This feels like Santa came early. I LOVE my squeezebox radio and SO missed it when Logitech walked away from it. I called them a LOT asking for a workaround. Got nowhere. Today I man friend found your video. Sure enough my Squeezebox now works and I am Ecstatic. I'm on a MAC Mini & had just updated OS to Sequoia 15.2. After I installed this server app I got a dialog box about Perl. Did that happen to others?

I found a ground trick that worked on my PL-330. Using a reel wire and standard clip on attachment, I used alligator clips to clip the end of the clip both to a ground lead and to the radio's whip antenna. This connection did reduce noise from my router. I could also plug in a 5 volt power supply and use shortwave very clearly. I still cannot use AM very well when power source is plugged in. But with a high capacity battery upgrade, I don't need to charge it often and I'm getting very good reception. The ground also reduces static when listening to am so I do not have to unclip the antenna. Convenient. Signal strength is the same either way grounded or not. But any reduction in noise is greatly welcomed. Of course I can always turn off my router from the power strip... but it's nice not to have to. Thanks for the video.

Hello. I have this device too. It is in a bad condition but I keep it because it is a memory from my childhood. Last year I poured machine oil on the mechanical part. Today when I wanted to start it again I noticed that the mechanics had completely hardened. I separated the detachable parts of the mechanics and washed them carefully before putting them back together. Everything seems to be fine but there is a problem that I don't understand. When I press the play button the white gear does not approach the black gear on the right. Therefore, there is a problem because the tape does not wind the reel while playing. Could you share your opinion if I send you the video?

A tip for hikers and campers; you can buy a solar charging radio like the Midland ER210 emergency weather alarm radio and use its power port to charge the Tecsun PL-330. I have two of those radios. I also bought two high capacity spare BL-5C batteries I can use for travel. But the greatest thing about the PL-330 for me is that I can operate this in the dark. The layout of the controls are so logical and so simple to memorize, the first day I was operating this in the dark just by feel with my fingers. Accessing all functions. Including all the memory bank functions. The separate memory locations are also incredible. This has features I wanted 25 years ago. Like being able to store upper, lower side band and SW frequencies on the same frequency. Then later deleting which ever one you do not want. Memory banks for each hour of sideband. Memory banks separate for each 6 hour block of medium wave. Another separate bank for FM. And a base memory. Sensitive, and great sounding speaker. Stereo FM earbuds. Long lasting battery life. I could go on but you get the idea. Still cannot believe the features of this radio at this price. Thanks for the video.

I bought this radio brand new from a department store (Rich's) in downtown Atlanta in 1978. Paid $49.99. Still have it, and all features still work. Not much to hear these days on the PSB band, but the NOAA weather broadcast comes in well. BTW... according to the internet, $49.99 in 1978 equates to $237 today. I find that very hard to believe. I was an engineering student at the time, working part time at the Atlanta Journal & Constitution. It didn't feel like I spent over $200 for a portable radio.

I took have the Apple and the Bowers&Wilkens Zeppelin Air. I agree that the B&W is a better and more costly speaker but the Apple seems to go louder if you are into loosing your hearing it for you! I understand that the decibel level the Apple can produce on battery is much lower than on AC.

What is that I hear around 13.92 mhz USB range on my radio? It sounds like professionals doing calibrations, then sending data packets coordinated with voice.
@global-hellsorosshjt54692 ай бұрын
Even on the old communication receivers there would be signals PINNING the meter and no noise although selective fading would occur. In the range he scanned I suspect there would be a hundred or more strong signals whether it be daytime skip or nightime below the MUF (maximum usable frequency) and they would be noise free. That tells me this radio has inferior sensitivity. No sideband to demo? At night on 7 mhz there are at least 20 convos on sideband; some very strong. Apparently this radio says that band is almost vacant.

I think holding the radio acts as a ground is that the same as conterpoise? Intersting idea wiring the negative battery terminal to ground seems grounding the radio itself may have more effect than grounding the aerial???

I bought my HD559 so long ago, I don't even remember when, it's been a couple of years. I never had headsets/headphones last long enough for the ear pads to wear down, so that was a really good investment for a decent and comfortable pair of headphones. Thanks for the video, I was a bit concerned just pulling them off, but it all went well with a lil' care :)

Hardly any thing compares to old 1920 ,1930 or 1940 tube radios for getting lots of shortwave channels . Well the fun of searching one touch of the tuning knob at a time . Old WW2 military field radio's picking up ship to shore and way more stuff regular shortwave just does not get ! Sure the things weight about 50 lbs. and ran on a 12 volt battery Just a capacitor on some of the transmission part could kill or hurt very badly even after years of just sitting ! Learn real fast to not set it All up !
