And to think at 19, you're just a year removed from high school, football games, prom and going to class with your peers, now you're dodging bullets, watching your buddy get blown apart and wondering if you're going to make it home. I'm an Army vet who served 8 years active and reserve duty. I thought it was a masterpiece when i heard it in '85. I bought the 12 inch and still have.

Thank you all for sharing your stories. I really didn’t know much about Nam, I was young but this beat is fire. People don’t make music about these casualties anymore. It’s almost like they no longer care about those out there dying for their country, or anyone and sometimes the vets aren’t even appreciated or cared for when they complete service. So Sorry for your losses, and thank you to all who served.🙏🏽

I remember in the '80s this mix got a ton of play with the synthesized electronic keyboard. And this song hit home with the Vietnam vets coming back from an endless war lasting officially from 1959-1975. US essentially was involved in WWII from 1942-1945. Vietnam war was 16yrs.

At the age of 18 we were fighting in Rhodesia, angola, south west africa caprivi. and at times Northern Mozambique . Despite what you maty be told it was a cruel war. Cruelty was on the side of the communists'. One of there favourite torture's was the sew a chieftain or headman into a cow skin then hung on a tree to slowly suffocate as an example to the tribes people. I was one of the lucky one who then served in a secret police unit attached nine squadron , Swartkop . I never fired a shot but still hold those who had to fight in the bush in high regard. The experiences of those who went to Vietnam and south african + Rhodies to die for others freedom then their government walked away as if they had bugger all to do with the deaths of their own still haunts me today. I know now never to trust any word from a government spokes person.
