3.00 kg is it infinite?
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman 18 күн бұрын
3.00 kg is a measurement taken on a balance so it has 3 sig figs (the non zero digit plus the two trailing zeros because there is a decimal point). Infinite sig figs is for numbers that weren’t taken with an instrument. So a count such as 7 days, or a conversion factor (1 gram = 1000 milligrams), or a definition (1 mole = 6.022x10^23). Those number has an infinite number of sig figs because they weren’t taken with an instrument or measuring device so they will never limit the number of sig figs you can have in an answer to a calculation. Hope this helps!

Is there a preferred strength of denatured alcohol for this project?
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman Ай бұрын
Great question! I would use at least a denatured alcohol that is at least 70% alcohol. But if you have one that is 90% or higher that will work well too. Once combined with the other materials it needs to be at least 50% alcohol to ignite. Hope this helps!

Quite interesting, tho I haven't found a source for polyethile oxide. Any other gelling agent that would work as well?
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman Ай бұрын
Great question! I originally tried using Xanthan Gum as a gelling agent (because it is more widely available) but when you add the amount of alcohol required it turn runny again. I decided to try the Poly Ox from the self siphoning slime that I recently made and it worked well. You can find the Poly Ox on a website called Educational Innovations if you really want to located it. But another polymer that is supped to work well is Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) which seems to be much more readily available on Amazon. Hope this helps!

what materials did you used in this experiment?
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman Ай бұрын
The solutions are made from deionized water and various ionic compounds (or salts) that have a cation that produces a color when placed in the flame. The most common tend to be Sodium Chloride, Lithium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Strontium Chloride, Calcium Chloride, Barium Chloride, Copper (II) Chloride. Nitrate variations of these salts also work well. Hope this helps!

Great video. Though, I think it's important to clarify that the liquid is in fact boiling, just not reaching the normal boiling point, i.e. at 1 atmosphere. The glass containers have a partial air vacuum, this means that liquids inside will boil at lower temperatures than if done in normal conditions. Hence when you increase the temperature a little bit with your hand, the liquid reaches a much lower boiling point (compared to 1 atm value) easily. When you separate both components, is because each of the components have different boiling points. And once the liquid is above, it stays up and doesn't go down because of the syphon that is in the middle, just as happens in toilets.

@@Trav_is_Newman Yes, likely not possible in reality - but Helium liquid defies gravity and can/will make its way out of a cup. The temperature required will be near 0 K, so any slime would be rock solid - hence, it would break physics and be super cool, if it actually could speed up draining the cup below, while moving up into a cup higher up.

Is this safe to use indoors as a an emergency source of heat? Or outdoor use only?
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman
@ChemCampwithMrsNewman 2 ай бұрын
When used indoors, with proper safety precautions and ventilation, I don't see why it wouldn't be safe to use. The components in the gel made in this video are very similar to the ones used in the commercial Sterno products sold in stores. In fact, I believe most Sterno products are made with methanol instead of ethanol. Ethanol is safer of the two alcohols. Hope this helps!
