And nearly a decade later, she scores the gold-medal winning goal in the Olympics. How awesome.

012323 After watching her unique high school career, then her absolute domination of NCAA DI cross and track for a year and a half, and now, her progression to the pros, it is safe to say that Gatorade has never been so justified in its prestigious award. Very few great high school champions in the middle and long distances manage to transition to college with the same dominance as they enjoyed as prep athletes. Even fewer college track and cross athletes are able to make a living as pros. Now, we'll see if she eventually qualifies for an Olympic team. Best of luck to Katelyn in her Big Adventure. Meanwhile, we acute sufferers of Katelyn Withdrawal Syndrome are obsessively rewatching the old videos like this one, and especially Perry King's Starshine Reflections series chronicling KT's rise to high school stardom.

121423 Watching this five years afterwards, we have watched history unfold.. Katelyn proved herself to be the greatest cross runner and one of the two or three greatest high school track runners in history. She dominated collegiate cross and track for more than one season, setting records only Jenny Simpson, 14 years earlier, could rival. Now we will see if KT can succeed at the national, pro level, and ultimately at the international pro level. Comparing international records is tricky, because there really isn't anything comparable to NCAA anywhere else in the world. If you look at how many international runners participated in the 2023 NCAA D1 champs you could get the impression that NCAA is a minor league for the Diamond League and other pro circuits. I believe that the weight on Ketelyn Tuohy's shoulders now is greater than when she was a collegian, because she enters the pro ranks as maybe the biggest USATF pro distance franchise ever. Every one of her contemporaries yearn to race head to head with her when she matures and sharpens with pro training and at altitude. I am quite sure that among her pro peers, Monson, Cranny, Morgan, Henes, Andrews, Schweizer, Houlihan, Rogers, etc., there is exactly nobody who wishes her ill, because she is the greatest thing that could happen to USATF, period.

In relation to her last name (McLaughlin), Sydney laughs remarkably rarely and little. Apparently the cameraman was trying to fix it, so beautiful! 2:44 But maybe Sydney deserves her last name after all. For example, with her time on the hurdles of 50:68, she would have placed quite well even in this year's finals of the World Championship without hurdles. There is a difference of 1:57s between the winner (49:11) and Sydney and in the hurdles there is a difference of 1:59s between Sydney and the great runner-up Femke Bol. Isn't that laughable?
