They mistook their genre-savviness for invulnerability, as though it was an actual superpower, and the universe made them pay for it _real hard._ But, of course, Zero wasn't involved in the slightest (unless he was the one responsible for setting off the bomb in the Monarchmobile, which, maybe? There's exactly one person who would give a shit about killing either 21 or 24 at that point). He made the exact same mistake he pinned on 21 and 24, thinking that HE was the main character instead, and held his grudge from the prior point of reference without paying real attention to how 21's story had changed by then. "You haven't changed a bit," ignoring the massive amount of changes that should be obvious just on face value. None of them understood until too late exactly what kind of story they were taking part in. The Venture Brothers is a story about _failure,_ after all. Every single character on the show is defined by their failures. All three of 'em believed their role in the story was about their successes instead, and they all paid a steep price for it.
