Thanks Michael for your courage and vunerability, to show us whitish people, un unrevealed reality of what many colour people has to face in many different levels.. and we have no idea, only on a very superficial level.. THANKS THANKS THANKS

This is more precious than gold. More insights in a brief hour than in years of study. Reminds us how lucky we were to have this brilliant man share his work with us, to have lived in the same era with him.

I cannot believe she is singing this song (amazingly) in her 70’s. I remember hearing this for the first time, and marveling with my female singer friends as to how she was doing it. And here she is 50 years later killing it. I have no words. It’s not possible! This can’t be happening.

LOL. Nathan is brilliant. I had the pleasure of playing the role of Stephen. Having also studied opera in my college years I have studied the role of Germont and my mom was an opera singer from NYC who always performed the role of Violetta. So La Traviata has always been my favorite Verdi. As an acting coach now I love teaching my students to perform the complex characters of McNally.

I wholeheartedly agree with the other commentators here. This hour spent with gifted composer Adam Guettel interviewing Broadway titan Stephen Sondheim is priceless. The content is educational and inspiring. Not only was Sondheim an innovative genius as a composer, but he is obviously a brilliant and compassionate teacher. Despite his magnificent career and richly deserved success, he retains his humility and perspective. He's a good man.

It’s so odd to see people badmouthing Guettel’s attitude toward Sondheim in this (brilliant) interview. Mary Rodgers, Guettel’s mother, was one of Sondheim’s closest friends. Guettel grew up having Sondheim as essentially a member of the family. He’s not casual with Sondheim because he’s rude-it’s because Sondheim is his mentor and practically his uncle. If you were interviewing a relative you were close to, I doubt you’d treat them with the kind of distant deference that these commenters seem to expect of Guettel.

I come to this interview frequently, as I consider it to be one of the best interviews done with Alan. Could you tell me how I can get in touch with him? Do you have his email or any contact details? I would really like to interview him. There is no record of him being interviewed by Brazilians and I really wanted to be responsible for doing this for my country.

In 2001 through a fortunate accident Stephen Sondheim and I became friends. So began the most extraordinary world altering beautiful tender miraculous and painful time of my life. It felt important to keep those two years private and that’s what I did. But, this video sparked a terrific memory. We were at Larry Kramers house for dinner and someone mentioned that Terrence McNally and another friend had both lost their partners and had decided to go on a trip to Cuba together - Larry Kramer called them “the widows Karamozov!” I brought up the Lisbon Traviata and how cool it was that the best monologue, maybe his finest writing, references Sweeney Todd like five times! Stephen said,”what monologue?” No one there knew about it, I was shocked. Larry had it printed out within minutes and we Took turns doing drunken dramatic readings of it to tease him - he was hysterical - it was such a fun night!
