When you are young you just listen as you grow older there is an amalgamation of layers of understanding where you realize that is why I love this music . Atleast this post is carefully taking the path not just for the writer but for almost each of you #1# Audio Film Music usually has visual Films to back .This movie Maya bazaar came in 1957 , even writers mother was a kid . This particular song had an instant appeal for the tune , possibly the visual effect of two heroes and two heroines had an effect with a slow paced boat ride . Hey NT Ramarao was the Lord Krishna replacing Gemini/Savithri and Akkineni Nageshwara rao/Savithri with for this bilanguage telugu and thamizh hit . But hey for audio why you need visuals,visual is not the reason. #2# Then you bit later realize the tune and the opening orchestration of the pluck of guitar , violin strings with minimal tabla , dholak and some special effect instrument with a distinct interlude is the reason . But hey as life moves on then you realize that is not the prime reason #3# Then one realizes the words are so beautiful.SOme phrases of thamizh especially like அலையின் அசைவிலே ஆசை நினைவிலே ஏ…….ஏ…..நிலை மறந்தேங்கும் நேரத்திலே ..... காலத்திலே, where it appears the words are so beautifully written to suit the mood and emote that too the word காலத்திலே is added and dropped with the charanam of the tune when repeated twice . As life moves on then you realize that is not the prime reason #4# Then you think the prime reason is the assembly of instruments blending with the voice of especially Ghantasala and somewhat P Leela did the magic. Every sangathi has the fidelity of voice with right balance of orchestration , nothing is over done for the sake of picturization and there is not an iota of athinga prasanghi steps of excessive percussion . As life moves on then you realize voice and orchestration alone is not the reason. #5A# NOw what the hell is the prime reason . It is nothing but the fundamental block of Indian Classical especially Carnatic music .That block is the ragam which is the emote color of song , the ragam of this song is Mohanam. Mohanam is so omnipresent to the chinease music to the advanced mellifluous Carnatic songs of thyagaraja and papansam sivan . In film music for most of us we had loved the song without knowing the ragam mohanam. For eg we have the early 1980 Meen Kodi Theril Manmatharajan in karumbuvil- a folk mountain song of God of Steady Modulation in mohanam, the a mid 1980 Geetham sangeetham in kokkarakko a love song of God of Melody, to a much later 1990 plus still melancholy song of Goddess of Musical Expressions/God of Music duet of Orukanam oru yugam in nadodi Thendral. #5B# All were mohanam the ragam is the fundamental hidden unknown reason that you liked the song though you did not know that is the key reason . Film Music of 1950 to 2000 has actually encapsulated lot of classical music where if the song is sticking to one ragam the muse stays with a longer shelf life- there can be exceptions. Coming back to this below song ------------------------------ The track singer Sriram Srinivasan has phenomenally rendered this mohanam based song Ahaa inba nilavinilE , his voice has taken a shade towards the slight huskiness of a ghantasala to perhaps suit 1957 and replaces both the duet singers as a solo, Every part of song has balance of musical emote with extraordinary sowkhyam . Edho Ninaivugal 👆 - mesemerizing placement of instruments and voice ----------------------------------------------------------------- Just 3 mins read !!! From School days ,Sriram Srinivasan most of the time has done some tinkering, mixing and matching with his voice of different songs . He has been doing it from mid 1980s non stop . He has done atleast 10 dozen songs collaborating with many usa based friends of his and I am not even aware of atleast 25 percent of those. Particularly my interest was more centered on those that I was not aware of in 1980s or 1990s . I shared few nuggets with all of you in the past. There may be 4 to 6 songs where i egged him to take and he took this song Edho Ninaivugal . Over to this song which Sriram sang in 2019 or 2020 as a refurbished song. #1# This song Edho ninaivugal is just a Brilliant song originally sung by God of Steady Modulation(KJ Yesudas)and sister of God Of Melody( SP Shailaja) in a vijayakant-shoba starring movie. The original track that is in youtube is bit off in sound quality . But the above track has a different story. #2# God Of Music for some program in singapore(not sure on location) invited a bunch of Violin professionals from Hungary and other elite orchestra stars of IR team played a live track . God Of music in that live concert made singer Madhu Balakrishnan sing this song instead of Yesudas. #3# Sriram took that live orchestra track with Hungary based violinist team and he did a voice over layering his voice on the live track . #4A# What a brilliance from God Of music and his brother Gangai Amaran who is actually fanta fabulous lyricist. See the words just hear the edugai mOnai (alliteration) #4B# God of Music especially from 1978 to 1985 did throw out the legacy approach of orchestration and did bring a sound perfect melody especially in interludes and preludes of every song .We are struggling to even find these high quality layering in even one song in last decade or two. For illustration, Take the second interlude of this song .There is distinct guitar with lead and Bass Guitar strumming. Then a whole team of string section . String section is violin, viola and Cello , you can hear very distinct layering of strings.Then with his bamboo flute drops and handing over with the guitar flash for the vocalist to start stanza. At almost omnipresent points, the keyboard envelops and creates a canvas of melodious perfect notes with minimalist drums for interludes and tabla for song. Everything is simple but deep in musical value with distinct sound layering. #4C# Thamizhin ayagE ayagu.... I am only noticing this only in the last say 5 years. Take these lines for edhugai monai that Gangai Amaran has written. Words must not cannibalize music, younger brother has helped for sure his elder brother நாடிய சொந்தம் நான் காணும் பந்தம் இன்பம் பேரின்பம்...ம் நாளொரு வண்ணம் நாம் காணும் எண்ணம் ஆஹா...ஆனந்தம்...ம் #4C# I just googled to find that the song is composed in a rare raga called sumanesaranjani. In carnatic music there are almost zero compositions and this ragam is yet to be showcased even by carnatic musicians . At the most there is some part of it is sung as a passing cloud of ragamaliga swaras . #4D# In our life , we have heard so many dual avatar songs in each movie . We usually have a duet avatar and generally a solo avatar by say spb (most likely) or kjy or Janaki.Usually we discard the duet and generally go with solo as it is musically more enriching most of the time . Solo usually gives more unfragmented musical experience. #4E# I heard thru grapevine this is one of the earliest tuned song by God of Music at an age of 20(1963) . This came into fruition much much later in 1979 as edho ninaivugal. In short this song was given birth by a panniapuram young adolescent composer (1963)--->>>that was possibly recorded in prasad or avm studio in madras(1979) -->>> then took an avatar with many violinists playing from hungary in singapore (2018 )--->>>then Sriram in Los Angeles just getting hold of that live orchestration track and he singing in his highly professional voice from his home in LA(2020). Ghazal like song composed even in 1978 by Panniapuram Maharaja- *n*ew *d*iscovery *t*ruly *v*enturous -ndtv series , Edition 6 of xyz, Oct 23rd ,2023 ---------------------------------------- 3 mins read, happy Saraswati Jayanthi and Navarathri In NDTV series , the song has to be better than the original or atleast very unique and new or some thing that I have not heard at all in my 90 percent of my life . Definitely no forwards .This qualifies as better than the original song sung by actor who dabbled as a singer. #1# God Of Music I am presuming in 1978 tuned this song keeping in mind to suit and make the above/below average singer Kamal Hassan as an experimentation but still the song is well done. Particularly he even gave a lot of distinct lung space for the singer in the middle of charanam as he even introduces a esoteric violin bit , that way the some what average singer looks good #2# The song has an overtone like a slow moving ghazal . We are slowly losing voice in today’s music and more importantly compositions with few minimal but deep orchestration is going out of vogue. I dont know the ragam of the song but it looks close to KAnaDA ragam. #3# In 1978 no way for me to then appreciate lyrics , the lyrics is simply superb written by a real legend Gangai amaran , who keeps the misogynist tendencies as the theme that was and to an extent even now prevalent. Thamizhin azhagE azhagu adapting ghazal and even rightfully complaining misogynist behaviour . #4# Every thing remains still with just the voice , violin with flanger (flanger is the purposeful distorted tune that God of Music brings to many compositions) with a lazy but deep alapana to start with- with tabla, timers, keyboard with bass guitar , single lead violin ( captain) and second interlude cameo appearance of Veena. The orchestration of interludes is not the usual illayarajaish with more variety but it is just an extension of central tune, bit more like his predecessor MSV , KVM or Shankar Jaikishan or Naushad. But there is sense of equanimity every where at every point with not a single note of anavsiyam. I picked this song to also project one main steady voice and one main instrument .Moving forward in life we have lost minimalism based perfection in music Well done Sriram Srinivasan and Gratitude Gratitude to God of Music for this song which is hidden and buried from the more prominent song ( uravugal thodarkadhai that god of steady modulation sang in the movie aval appadithaan).
