The Tops Moccasin Ranger has been a favorite of mine for years (with a few mod’s) but choking back to chop is no fun. The most functional Tops tool I’ve tried is the Longhorn, it works great, again I stripped and polished it, ground a flat spine and had it Kydex’d. Definitely better value out there today...

I like your design...I too have been on the same quest for year’s trying many knives. The lightest I go is a Fallkniven S1 or Bark River Aurora 2 and a Bacho Laplander saw in summer. When colder weather approaches everything gets bigger. My go to’s have remained the Fallkniven A1 and Bark River’s 3V Bravo 2 for year’s. I tend not to like to carry knives over 1 pound. That 12-13oz range is my sweet spot with a 6” usable edge. I’m kinda liking the Architect 6.5 in 3V is getting me close but I’m already wanting to eliminate the drop point by grinding down the spine. It deflects batons and could use a better balance...I’ve been waiting years for Bark River to come back out with the Squad Leader 2 and Bravo Surviver...

I gotta say my experience with Tops isn't the same as youtube fanboys. The two knives ive tried i gave away. Awful grinds way to thick behind the edge. Extremely high price for 1095. Im to the point im making my own instead of paying $200 for basic carbon steel. I really use 4-5 in blades the most. Im starting a few puukko handles i just got a BPS Aura for $60 to the door. I also wanna put another handle on a 16in tramontina.

I love collecting knives though I would like to learn how to make one . Had an issue with mildew at a storage facility where a few banker boxes of mine got infiltrated . A lot of vintage knives and things got hit pretty hard . We got a claim paid because the unit had a leak and messed up furniture and some other things too . Just opened a box yesterday and found that there where some more affected knives and things but the worst was the rust spot on a really nice knife I got at an auction for a few hundred dollars . Beautiful Damascus blade etc made by a top knife maker , can't recall the name at the moment . I have to get to work on that spot soon but I think it will have a character mark no matter what . If it only came with a sheath I wouldn't have this problem . Anyway new sub here , take care now .

Put a few ranger bands or big rubber bands around the center of the grip, like on a traditional kukri handle. If you like it then you cement or glue it down. Doesn't take much.

I just got my set yesterday and was very excited with the mix of styles until my son pointed out that 3 of the 5 were very bent. A pity as they looked like quality machetes, well all except the tiny "Rambo" style Truper branded one. That one looked like something you'd get at Walmart.

Best thing about Lon Humphrey's knives, is that he uses ballbearing steel, which is one of the best choices, for an outdoors knife. All the steel hype nowadays, is just marketing and how to make more money. You have to be able to maintain a field knife in the field and nothing beats ballbearing steel, on what it offers! Edge stability/toughness, is out of this world on this steel, people who think, that this is similar to 1095.. that's not true. ballbearing steel, can stay sharper at least x3 more, than 1095, which is reeally big difference when you actually use the knife. It's toughness is also way better and it's carbides cut noticably better than 1095. Keep it shap and enjoy!! Happy new Year!!
