Hello! Thank you so much for this video. Do you have any techniques for teaching these strategies to a student with intellectual disabilities?

You mentioned to set a timer for the mini lesson time, but never mentioned the amount of time this should last. Based on your experience and a 60min math block, how much time should this time typically be?

I loved this idea. So for the whole class of lets say twenty kids… if we divide kids into four person groups. We need a set of five. Right?

Hello! I’m enjoying your videos this summer :) Curious as to what behavior communication you use for parents. Last year I used a daily calendar with which the kids colored at the end of the day depending on their color on the flip card chart (green, yellow…). Do you use something to communicate daily with parents concerning behavior or just communicate with them on an as needed basis?

Hi @loriholmes2398, I use Class Dojo for behavior management. Parents can connect to the app and see student behavior. It's also how I send class announcements and is the primary way parents can reach out to me if needed.

I am really surprised a teacher is allowed to have their own child in their class. Not about the teacher's effectiveness but as a liability issue for the school board (it would be impossible to show that favoritism or bias wasn't happening in class if another parent, because it is an inherent conflict of interest that impacts classmates). This isn't ab issue as the parent, of course, but it is for an employee of the institution (especially if it is a public school, where teachers are public sector employees). Not knocking the teacher. Just a very risky thing to allow, policy-wise, on the school/board's part. We are not allowed to teach our own kids in our board for this reason.

I have been a substitute teacher and definitely saw classrooms that were overwhelming to me. I especially like your tip about switching out anchor charts as the year progresses. I think some teachers just keep adding as the year goes on or start with an entire wall of strategies. They might be academic focused, but children probably won't scan a whole wall to find the piece of information they need.

Marcy, your story hits home in so many ways! I took time off to raise children and went back to the classroom the year covid hit. We also moved from Tulsa to southeast Oklahoma 2 years ago, quite a big change. I'm glad to hear you're a fellow Okie now!😉 What area of Oklahoma are you in?

I have been doing the dot method for 25+ years but I always connected it to the alligator eating the bigger amount. I don't remember why I started to do the dot method...other than I wanted them to see 2 was bigger than 1. My 1st graders have always been able to draw the symbol correctly and over the years I have seen an increase in the amount of students who now understand the connection to the phrases greater than and less than. I was happy to see that this method is supported by others in education. Thanks so much for always sharing your ideas and strategies to helping kids grasp the WHY not just the HOW.

As a sub teacher I have exactly one classroom on my list of Never Again subs. The room was painted and decorated in such a chaotic fashion and so many things making noise or moving or blinking or plastered on the walls and ceilings that I was having difficulties controling my own stress regulation!

This was all SPOT ON! After teaching for many years, it makes me cringe when I walk into classrooms and every single place on the wall is taken with pretty but non-meaningful materials. Many teachers think they need a fun and cute classroom and that is totally NOT the case. We have so many more behavior students these days and it really distracts them and does not help them.

Thank you for your kind words. I definitely think that social media has pushed over the top classrooms. I also agree behavior needs to take top priority.

Great information and reminders! I teach kinder, my biggest pet peeve is seeing classrooms filled for day 1. Really not much should be up, should have a reason being up and created over time as you learn. In primary grades, the quote posters I hate, most kids can’t read them and are just visually busy. Some have gotten away from what a classroom should truly be.

I definitely agree with you that not much should be up at the beginning of the year. I can also agree with your take on quote posters in Kinder. There can be a happy medium with having a cute and welcoming classroom without it being overly busy.

Ty. I teach adult learners and I haven’t had to teach regrouping until now so I was only able to remember the last method. I’m going to use the 2nd method.

I'm teaching adults the numbers and, of course, to count. The main focus is "numbers for travel" as they are planning to go abroad (to US or UK) and need to be sharp. I know they'd find really silly to put "hairs" on the coins, but my kids will surely know this method. lol

Your classroom looks great. You won't regret staying home with your daughters. I was a teacher for seven years. Then I had twin daughters, and I stayed home for six years. I returned to the classroom. I worked until I reached 28 years in total as a teacher. I spent 21 years in second grade, and I loved it. Have a great year.
