I mind seeing this at the time on The Tube and watched it with mouth wide open, loved this song and still have the single.

Was thanks to John Peel and his radio show i heard Fad Gadget playing Ricky's Hand, liked it so much i bought the 45 single and got it played in the jukebox of my local pub, and yes the electric drill that was used on the soundtrack even got a mention how cool was that.

The sounds in the very song are top notch but something about this remains laughable and forced to bits - to start with, they all struggle here with not having much to do - be it the song or themselves for that matter; in essence, this should have been effective a performance, but nothing seems to be convincing about it - but a pale shadow of a confrontational band they were not long before this; and bashing in scrap metal doesn't help at all, only emphasises the cliché, sadly disclosing them as one - "hey, throw in some flame now... ok, now, let's have some sparks flying... ok, now I'll climb on top a barrel and bash it in some more..." The lyrics are super shallow and the voice carrying it (with no disrespect to Sinan) struggles to carry out what was supposed to be a "threatening message to the world"...
This is when they were also collaborating with print designer Sue Clowes on her Flesh And Steel collection. Sinan's outfit and Graeme's jacket were both by Sue.

@antunivanovic2 жыл бұрын
Well, that same poor Jools appeared on The The's "Soul Mining", shoulder to shoulder with a certain Clint Ruin among others, so I believe he was pretty aware of all this - and judging it how he announced SPK for the occasion, sadly says a lot about the very group, who at the time of this performance headed more for a poseur caricature than the confrontational bunch they once were...

The SPK stuff from Metal Dance onwards really isn't bad, I think it just alienated their following a bit too much. Machine Age Voodoo is solid fun 80s cheese, and after that they went right back to making left field music.
