A full dialtune drum set could also possibly make some inroads in the A2E drum community as a hybrid alternative. I see more and more "drop in" trigger components where it would be slick to be able to quickly open up a drum and swap out acoustic heads with mesh heads and vice versa

I tried it. I like the resonance of snares but I hate the sound of basically not tight snares. What I do is I get my snares really tight and then weave a plastic strip through the snares. You can play around a lot with positioning, hardness or how you weave it trought. That gives me tight snares on impact and a nice resonance after. I call it the Bo Diddley Method. He weaved playing cards through his guitar strings to get a snare sound.

For this particular groove, I like the tape the most. Controls the sound slightly without knocking too much character out of it. I tend to use an o-ring cut out from an old drum head but it's 1/2 an inch wide rather than a whole inch. I find that offers a similar level of dampening. Though all down context of course - there's plenty of times where I would opt for a more dead sound.

Did you try to tune them the same? The Dialtone's ring was harsher and had a long sustain. Unfortunately I'm really adversely sensitive to snare ring (it's a Sensory Defensiveness thing) so I'm in a constant struggle to tone down or muffle the ring without losing the unique sound of each snare. I can put a big fat snare mat on and it sounds great but I find if you muffle snares too much they all start to sound the same. I want to buy a black beauty and I'm hoping if I call Ludwig they'll install an internal adjustable muffler for me. Thanx for the comparison.
@ColeParamore2 ай бұрын
They are indeed tuned the same. More overtones with the Dialtune for sure. As they say, you can always take out overtones but you can't put it back in.

Imagine going over to your bandmate’s mansion of a home, only to see a non working kick pedal, a non working high hat pedal, no cymbals, and three toms that aren’t even in the right order. And mind you, these drums were horribly neglected, cobwebs and sh, and obviously the drums horribly tuned, or not tuned at all. At least it wasn’t like I was playing at a gig, but damn it took me about 20 minutes to get that set to look like the one shown above.
