Interesting research. I'll try some perimeter heated, weighed down char cloth experiments someday and see if it eliminates brittle char cloth. Supple is not all I'm going for though. It can be supple and still covered with smoke residue and therefore less reactive. Good denim char cloth will be so clean that it will have a slight sheen on it. And I've also noticed that all char the first time out of the fire and char tin will be highly reactive. That terrycloth char cloth will get progressively less and less reactive over time. Because of the moisture it draws in every time the storage container is opened.

I think if I place my washcloth charcloth on the porch when it is raining and the humidity high I wonder if it will do like you say and become less reactive--I try that if it ever rains.-- I guess you are talking about some moisture in washcloth from the air cause it to be less reactive.---One thing puzzled me was I had about 2 inch Nicholson file left over and added it to the top of my tin weight. When cloth was done there was a lot of creosote build up on the carbon steel fire piece but none on the aluminum foil covered tin top.

I love your new trees I just started one this week the way you did I hope I get it to start to root in a few weeks! ---BTW If I sit on a bucket I would not get up 75 years old so I bought a three foot tall stool and works great.

Emory can this be done now in the winter with out the watering and while there are no leaves on the plant to get the saplings and inside growth. Or do I need to wait until the spring after the tree is leafed out.
@emory203
@emory203 8 жыл бұрын
The roots will not grow in the bottle in winter BUT Now is the time when trees are bare to cut the bottoms off a few 2 or 3 liter drink bottles. Go ahead and slide them over some straight branches. Fill with soil when first new growth appears in Spring. It is a lot easier to slide the bottle over a branch now instead of waiting til tree leafs out.

my cuttings turned black on the bottom? I use 60% potting soil and 40% perlite I water or mist every 2 days I don't drench it I just spray the air surrounding the cuttings, and sometimes each cutting 1or twice, why are they turning black?

I like to have 2 month of growing season. In two months of warm weather a 2 liter bottle should be root bound. Keep it damp and roots have been seen in bottle as early as two weeks but more likely 4 weeks. If you use commercial type soil I like garden soil better than potting soil. It doesn't dry out as fast--good luck.

I must say, that's the first time I've seen air layering done with a cola bottle. Typically done with plastic wrap and spagnum. This really is pretty cool. I'd paint or wrap the bottles myself just as a precaution. Roots exposed to UV will harden and bark over if exposed for too long. Excellent method though, kinda embarrassed I never thought about it. :P

Love this, very informative and helpful! I did this to an english rose I believe, but had to take the cutting on aug 14th. I am in zone 5, do I put it in the ground and how should I protect it over winter? Or if I should put it in a 50 degree area, when would I do this? My first rose bush :D Thank you so much!!

Sure you can plant it in the ground if you plan on keeping it. If you are going to give it to someone it is best to pot it and save having to dig it up.
