The photographer is standing at E 10th St, facing West, with the parade running from the north to the south along S. Phillips Ave. The building on the south (left) side of the intersection is still there, but all the buildings to the north (right) side were razed to put in parking and a building for an insurance company. Here is the exact location maps.app.goo.gl/GdR7eKM5vNmGKEk36

I'll add that judging from the interaction he gets ( around 2:20 ) and his eye for short skirts and swimsuits, that this was likely a young man.

I'm working on a Monty Python type of comedy movie in Daytona Beach. Do you do cinematography work? I saw a K3 16mm video, and you had an FSU shirt on. Some other footage made me think Florida. I don't know if I'll rent a crystal sync 16mm or buy a K3 or a Scoopic. I want to shoot a short film about a lighthouse keeper that plays before my feature. I want to shoot the short on 16mm. There is also one scene in the feature that I want to shoot on 16mm. I'm sure you're busy. I'm just trying to figure out my 16mm game plan. Thanks.

I always thought film quality was low fidelity. But this sounds fantastic. I always thought that Super 8 sound would be the worst of all film formats as it has the narrowest soundtrack. BUT cassettes although look wider, they're cut into 4 tracks - 2 in one direction and 2 in the other. So the one track on a cassette is 1/4 of the tape. Probably around the same size as the Super 8 soundtrack. AND cassettes run at 1 7/8 IPS. Super 8 at 24FPS, I'm guessing the film frame is about a 1/4 inches? 4 frames roughly equal one inch maybe. Divided 24 by 4 and you get 6 IPS tape speed. Maybe Over 3 times better quality than cassette. Very high quality.

That's a great breakdown! Quick note, when running sound on these old films, it was always done at 18 FPS, not 24. I do my own double system sound now though at 24 FPS.

Surprisingly exellent sound! At first I thought that was horribly loud projector but then realized it must be a motor bike or minibike maybe. Sounds like Dean Martin's version of "Memories" perfomed by someone else playing in the background. And that was playing there right? Not overdubbed?

Thank you! Yes, definitely a motor of some kind in the background. I'm always surprised at the audio quality of some of these old Super 8 cartridges. I shot a lot of them in the 80s & 90s and don't remember them sounding this good, lol. Yes, that music is playing there, not by me.

Hey I have a Chinon 40 SM XL. Mine isn’t powering up though with batteries. I did see on the back there is a 6 volt battery input, does yours have that? And can you use that to try and power it up? I know it’s not the same camera but I wondered if yours had that as well since it’s the same brand

My Chinon 20P XL doesn't have that, however I have several other Chinon models that do. Yes, you can run them independently off that jack in lieu of the batteries. Give it a shot, sometimes that brings them back to life :)

Both of them have unacceptable amounts of Gate Weave but the Pro was better. It also didn't have as much yellow tinge in the highlights. Obviously your MovieStuff Retroscan grossly outperformed these units, but it's disappointing the Wolverine can properly register each frame steadily. It weaves and bobs along virtually every axis, X, Y, and even Z.

@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 5 күн бұрын
I've always done it that way because the film's natural curl is with the emulsion in. I like the film to be on the spiral the opposite way, so that it will have a natural "spring" to help keep it in place in the grooves and tighter against the groove wall.

Thanks for the info on the melting emulsion. I didn't know that. Is there a way to prevent that? I wasn't referring to Ektachrome though, I have a bulk stock of c-41, large format film, and it always comes out completely blank in color, but I will get an image in black and white developer..
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 6 күн бұрын
The only way that I really know of is to either use a pre-hardener for the soft emulsion or reduce the development temps considerably (room temp or lower). C-41 films do not fare well over time, especially if they weren't frozen for life. I have a considerable number of rolls of old 35mm & 120 film and it's so hit & miss with it (usually miss).

Fantastic video! These family films always fascinates me, that people shot the film and never processed it. Amazing time capsules. I wonder the stories of where, when and who are just the mysteries. ES-8 was a forerunner of E6, the 7244 has no remjet backing and getting any results is very, very hard. It also was dubbed Supermatic and used a big Supermatic (aka the SM you noted) machine that would give you color results in 17 minutes. They also issued it in 200-foot cartridges and sound cartridges. They should all have edge codes. I tried shooting and developing a few cartridges, but they were all duds, but I have more to shoot from different sources. The ASA/ISO is also 160, so they had XL cameras in mind. All those dots and dirt from decay? Still, even with your excellent correction work, you can see how good the color was meant to be. Someone had a 7244 fully developed clip posted many years ago, cleaner and more colorful and color correct, but it disappeared before I could sample it.
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 12 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info Nicholas! I knew it was ISO 160 but really had no ideas on the ES-8 developing. Those dots are definitely from deterioration, as I clean the film before scanning. I may have a roll or two of this stuff in 16mm somewhere around her, I need to dig. So much fun learning about these older stocks. I'm building quite a little database :). By the way, you should see what they call that processing machine on the 7244 page on Filmkorn 😅

@@Filmboy24 That Supermatic Processor is huge, the bottles they made of developing fluid had different shapes that you plugged in so there were no errors and it is the Ektachrome between the 160s and later 64T and 100Ds. At Film Rescue, it is on the list as one of the films least likely to turn out well after all these years because of the lack of remjet, et al. It took a while for Kodak to perfect E6 before they perfected it and its still with us today, including a really good three-step version I saw that delivered great results.
