I am very fortunate. I have two great friends that I made when we were about 16 years old. We are such good friends that I would personally take a bullet for either of them. I don’t mean to sound melodramatic, but I would be willing to die for either of them. Also, through interesting circumstances I have recently rekindled a relationship with a guy I went to high school with. My first two buddies and I have welcomed him into our little group with open arms. TADAHH! We have a foursome for our occasional breakfast get-togethers.

I retired at 47. I left my career, corporate office job and went and bought a small sheep farm in Wales. We farm because we want to. We don't have to - but I like to have something new to learn about and think about. I didn't want to move out here and become a "full time tourist" like a lot of my neighbours. I strongly recommend if you're going to retire early that you find something new to focus on. Hobbies, volunteering, whatever it is - but if you retire into a vacuum you'll regret it.

I finally stopped full time work at 68 not because I didn’t like what I was doing, but because the pace of business was causing me so much stress I really thought it was going to kill me (and it probably would have.) What a difference without the stress, I lost weight, got lots of sleep and actually feel better and healthier than I had for a long time.

I am about a month away from retirement. My wife and I have done well financially but our life has been full of extreme highs and extreme lows. We are high school sweethearts married almost 40 years. This year, we both lost our son and had a financial windfall at the same time. My business partners thought it would be a good time to buy me out and then proceeded to offer me more money than I have ever dreamed of. They were thinking of her and I. Those dudes are Saints. Literally we will never have to work again. We just buried our son a few weeks ago. The house feels empty and the feelings are still raw. We feel like he will come through the door at any minute. But, in the same breath, we have talked about traveling and paying off the house and all the good things that empty nesters do. As an engineer, I’m a bit of a workaholic. My wife took care of our son. We haven’t been on a vacation in over 18 years. I may wake up next year some time. Love your video. I’m in a weird place. I can’t be happy. But, also, I can’t be sad. As my Dad would say “Onward through the fog”.

What I really wanted to say is that “retirement is not about resting. It’s about experiences. Hug everyone. Tell everyone that you love them. It’s your time to be REALLY HAPPY.

Those are extreme highs and lows. I'm sorry for the loss of your son. We lost our daughter in 2020, and we can honestly feel your pain. They say time heals, it doesn't, it only dulls the pain. I am glad to read that the buyout set you up well financially. I wish you well in your future. Buzz

I also retired about a year ago and did so with little fanfare. I just had a lunch with the handful of people on my team rather than have a happy hour with a big crowd of people. I avoided this because there were some coworkers I just didn't care to interact with. I'm also experiencing the lost social aspect of work. I had several coworkers ask for my personal phone number and email address so they could contact me. Other than the coworker I sat next to for 12 years, I haven't heard from a single one of them.
