could derm be considered for the premierships category? he probably wasnt as good as those other boys, but he would be close and he did win 5 premierships for a reason.

You HAVE to remake this as a 10 year remake. That list will change a bit.

I really enjoyed this. As with the Brownlow Medal, it unfairly rewards midfielders. Scott Wynd, Gary Dempsey, Barry Round and others, couldn't earn a Brownlow today. The closest was Corey McKernan in 1996, but Corey got more clearances than many midfielders and more goals than any ruckman. As we all know, the AFL cognoscenti list Carey, Matthews, Ted Whitten, and the Abletts as easily the leading AFL GOAT charts. But these numbers pretty much tend to reward possessions, goals, and games. This is a bad heuristic for greatness; it favours those who kick goals 10 times higher than those in the backline who stop many more of these goals. My grandfather played for Carlton and Fitzroy from the '30s to the early '50s. And Laurie Nash was the greatest player he ever saw on the field. He recounted Nash, as a ruck rover, kicking 15 goals in a game and also kicking four goals 17 points. Anyway, we all have different versions of what greatness should look like.

How does player ratings factor in finals? Dusty 2017 was third in all time, but does that account for a premiership and a norm smith?
@HarryLiptak
@HarryLiptak Ай бұрын
Yeah they 3x his ratings because of the Norm. Apparently before accounting for it he was around 50 all time.

Why Leigh Mathews is the GOAT:11 times in top 3 in Hawthorn B&F between 1971 to 1982,including 8 wins,in a top side.Only missed 1979 because he missed 9 games.Skilton and Murray won 9 each but for lowly sides.

The fact that carey and abblett snr never won brownlow tell you that its a glorified midfield award

The problem here is that the top 3 players of all time didn’t win a Brownlow. Matthew’s, Ablett Snr, Carey. But good you’ve acknowledged that. Good work.

Lost me in the intro saying that LeBron is the only contender to Jordan. Once the dust settles he will be lucky to be top 5. It’s a bullshit debate created to get clicks. If you follow your mantra of using numbers the LeBron only gets longevity.

You clearly have a vendetta against Neale winning last year, which is stupid. And the idiot in the comments that said that neale is the most overeated player in the league? Obviosuly doesn't understand anything about AFL. Neale is objectively one of the best players currently playing, as is Bont. I do agree though that Bont 100% deserves a Brownlow. But history has always shown that the browlow is not statsically the best player, brownlow votes get polled for so many other things than what gets shown on a data sheet.

I think it's fairly apparent that forwards are at a clear disadvantage. Either posession is over rated or goals are under rated. They're much harder to get than they used to be. IMO a 6 goal game now is the equivalent of a bag of 10 in the 90's or early 00's.

The AFL is no longer a sport in my eyes, giving Neal the Brownlow last year cemented that idea that it's all just an entertainment business and no longer a sport. They will award to the best story line so the media can talk up the fairy tale. Going by your video it seems the AFL employed more people with their heads screwed on before 2015 but since then its the best story wins.

Abletts 2009 was stunning. I remember one time he got caught on the boundary by 3 players and the commentators where making some comment about trying to contain him, he just started walking backwards and then somehow against all the laws of physics created space for himself and just moved the ball forward.

Even if player ratings were calculated for pre-2012, like any stat, it is difficult to compare across eras. E.g given the number of stoppages in the game nowadays, hitout/clearance numbers (and hence player ratings) of current players would be inflated. On the flip side, a greater focus on team defence has led to lower scores -> present players disadvantaged as they kick fewer goals

What I got out of this video is that Naitanui had 5 seasons rated in the top 100 since 2012. Man was he an underrated legend. I doubt that his 2021 season will ever be matched for pure ruck craft and clearance dominance.
