There’s updated information indicating that some won’t fly across the gulf. The rubies say migrating from the western edges of their boundaries will instead funnel through central Texas and through Mexico. I am in Brazos County Texas and have clusters & waves of migrant rubies Aug - early Oct.

I always wondered what prevents humming birds from suddenly smoldering and exploding like a fire cracker? Their nectar is literally rocket propellant just to deal with their explosive metabolism. One of the favorite pastime's of oil platform workers is to have their red gloved hands holding cups of nectar in the late evening so they can attract humming birds to feed out of their hands.

For the second summer I have parent Eastern bluebirds and their offspring coming every evening to bathe in the plant saucers of fresh water I clean and fill every evening. It's quite entertaining watching them bathe because they really get into it and splash water outside the saucers for a good 2ft radius. It's like mom and dad keeping watch while the kids play in the pool.

When gathering my hummingbird feeders to clean and fill, my red bellied and downy woodpeckers call from the adjacent oak tree to let me know that they want their unsalted peanuts and peanut butter and suet pellets. They need to be quick because the blue jays also know about the stashes I put in the oak tree.

I was wondering where my swarm from last year went, and whether I wasn't making their nectar quite right compared to last year. Thanks for the information! However, I'm confounded by how they will empty ONE feeder in hours while one exactly like it next to it they only go to if their favorite is empty. The feeders with small flowers they seem to ignore.

These amazing and completely awesome hummingbirds deserve to have a life of love and compassion. These male hummingbirds are almost like the Allen’s hummingbirds, but don’t have russet feathers. And the female red throated hummingbirds do not have that colorful gorget like the female Allen’s hummingbirds.

How fascinating. I love hummingbirds. In Southern California, I had hummers year-round; now I’m in Oklahoma, I hate to see them go. Thanks very much.

I enjoyed your video presentation. My challenge is the lack of sunlight on our heavily wooded yard. I have seen the hummingbirds attracted to the flowers produced by hostas. I need to find more native plants that are suitable to our yard, and that will provide food for a greater variety of insects and birds. I look forward to reading your book.

Is this part 2 in the hummingbird series?
@tomservo5347 Жыл бұрын
I just watched some nature show about hummingbirds claiming that they only have a 15 minute energy reserve so how is this migration possible? Anyway after moving back out to the family farm the wife and I have set out 3 feeders and I've caught the hummingbird fever. It's so amazing being swarmed by 10 of them holding feeders in my hands that I've just refilled. For such tiny things they're full of bravado and it's a treat hearing and watching them chirp, flare, and perform aerobatics trying to stake a claim on their 'own' feeder. I've also set out little pieces of dryer lint around on hedges as I've read they'll use it to build their tiny nests. Right outside my window in the hedge are hummingbirds, carolina wrens, and a family of cardinals along with about 10 bluebirds that love bathing in my wife's flower saucers.

This Threat Assessment was as pertinent and gripping as any briefing for pilots of F-18s,A-4s or EA-6Bs that I have taken part in. No off to redo the environment for my Hummers. Further questions, which snakes are the threats? Any species or ALL? 20% survival rate is horrific!!

Thank you for this information. I wonder though, if hummingbirds lay 2 eggs twice a year, a total of four, and only 20% survive the first year (let's say 1 of 4 eggs for simplicity), how come they are not extinct? Are there more females than males?

I cannot believe that a praying mantis can kill a hummingbird- thank you so much for sharing! I have about 6 different hummingbird feeders that I refill daily on my balcony and will get about 10-20 birds there at one time. There is a greenish sparrow that stops by daily also likes the sugar water but it seems to be nice to the other hummingbirds. I’ll definitely lookout for any praying mantis! That would devastate me if a bird was killed due to one on my balcony.

I think they are totally awesome. I’ve learned so much about them.? I have become totally committed to helping them by keeping feeders. I just hope that more people would help them out by adding feeders. I really enjoy watching them! They are so fast. I’ve learned out to make bird baths so they can have water and take a bath. It has become a blessing for me doing this for them. I’m home not and I love doing this for them. I look forward to when they come back. To their ready feeders at my house. I Just Love Them so much!

It's October 5 and now all I have are a few youngsters at my feeders. They are far less afraid of me than the adults and will zip and fight right next to me! I put feeders out in early September for the first time ever. I had mature males at first. They each claimed a feeder but the females and juveniles were persistent. I also have flowers and morning glories. The two types of hummingbird moths also seemed to show up with the birds, and what's crazy is the moths don't care and completely ignore me. I'm in Southeast Texas.

More Hummers than I ever imagined getting. Too many to count. Literally all over the place. This is only my 2nd year. I put three feeders up early last spring. I guess the birds that survived migration last fall returned here. I posted many videos on YT of the awesome success we've had. Your information in these videos were a huge help. Thank you kindly!!

I am new to Hummingbird watching. Bought my first feeder. Day 1 2 visits. Day 2 3 or 4. Today? I filmed many. They are fighting at times. I am ordering many more feeders. And I plan to plan their favorite flowers. Listening to learn more subbed!!!
