I love how Lee Pace’s amazing performance subtly shows us how much Thranduil loves Legolas. He’s polite at best and downright cold at worst when interacting with or talking about anyone else. But he is quick to be protective of Legolas’ feelings, warning Tauriel not to lead him on and hurt him. I bet even if Tauriel wasn’t “lowly,” Thranduil would still find some excuse to oppose their potential union; he’s not ready to let Legolas go, and doesn’t actually think anybody is good enough for his son. Later Thranduil doesn’t scold Legolas for openly disapproving of his killing of the Orc and calmly answers Legolas’ questions, rather than tell him to shut up or “know his place” or anything harsh. He sends a messenger all the way to Dale to bring Legolas home and away from danger. When Legolas defies him and says “you’ll have to kill me,” rather than get angry like he does when anyone else snaps at him, Thranduil totally shuts down and his face falls with heartbreak. Then at the end, Thranduil searches all over Ravenhill for Legolas, his face showing his desperate fear that he’s about to see his child lying among the dead. When Legolas admits he needs to finally leave the nest, Thranduil respects his wish and lets him go, even offering advice on where to go. And though the topic of his wife is clearly an extremely difficult one for him, he finally gets how important it is for him to give Legolas closure about it, and so he does. And he holds back his tears at his son’s departure until his son has left and can’t see them. He may have his flaws, but he really adores his only child. The indicators are subtle, but they’re there.

I'm no great authority on the Lord of the Rings but when I think of it I can't help but think of this seemingly effete character who charges into an enemy stronghold astride a gigantic elk and rolls into a fighting stance without fear, as if he knows he's the baddest motherfucker on the field and then proves that he is.

When Game of Thrones was airing I was pretty disturbed by the hate Sansa received from fans. Many of whom, did not seem to realize she was a young girl traumatized by the loss of her father and the destruction of her house, groomed left and right by all sort of predators until she finally learned the ways of this world.

This is the best “Thranduil” video compilation! All others mask his beautiful voice with music but not here ❤ it’s crazy how a great character like Thranduil has only 11.28 minutes of acting in a 9 hour trilogy but…. He marked my heart as no other character. Lee Pace is great in his role 😊

Wow, this discipline among the Elves. Even the Roman imperial Exercitus Romanus (a.k.a the legions) at the height of its disciplined fighting would look like a chaotic mess compared to the Elves.
