Magic swan river sailing by the legendary Campbell Stewart 👍

Sailing on the Swan River,out of the Nedlands Yacht Club,over many years,despite been a river,the water conditions are changeable.Back then,racing would only be called off when the winds we’re constantly over 25kts ,with the Fremantle Doctor (the local Seabreeze) 15/20kts was about average ,good times 😀😀😀😀 Robbie Binedell.

Pretty sure MoneyPenny shouldn't be allowed to sail upwind with the bowsprit in the OUT position. At least that is the rule in Europe. The bowsprit can only be hauled out AFTER the windward buoy has been rounded. Otherwise - and in closer situations - there can be nasty accidents. Just saying...
@SaKuLificationАй бұрын
where is the difference to a fixed sprit then?
@user-oe1mb9hu9iАй бұрын
@@SaKuLification A fixed bowsprit is what it says FIXED and is an integral part of the vessel. Don't even know why I'm getting involved here. Look up the international regulations and double check with your club.

if the numbers remain good ie height and speed - hang onto that full main. other wise a little tuck would help yacht control
@nicholaspaterson1543Күн бұрын
These are tippy boats. They have really bendy mast and love constant back stay attention. I play the back stay nearly as much as the main sheet. Having sailed this boat in a breeze you can hang on with full main and a #3 quite a while. After that a #4 is still better than a reef. It lets you power up in the lulls and dump in the puffs. obviously at a certain point reefing is the choice but there are a lot of tools on this boat at your disposal before getting to that point.
@yachticusКүн бұрын
@@nicholaspaterson1543 - from the outside - what ever is going on seems to be working(with the exception of the main) certainly a "good sail"

Man has never created anything as exquisitely beautiful and sensuous as a boat, especially the old Meter boats. I had a 5-1/2 Meter boat built in 1919. Pure eye candy. The mainsail guy(s) needs to mind the main sheet more. Sailing on the rail is fun and exciting, but kills boat speed.

It's a very pretty boat. My dad used to tell stories of Eun Na Mara and Panamuna duelling each year on the Bunbury race...probably in the 1950's or 60's.

It still has to be self-righting in the event of a knock-down so it must have ballast.

There’s a wand at the bow which changes a flap on the moth main foil to change the lift, and on a nacra as the foil lifts out of the water the lift decreases, which brings it back down

Many thanks Lindsay for your excellent video of my Ness Yawl sailing in the Swan River Retro Races, and to Kim for your response. One further correction please: the boats name is Wee Birlinn, not Berlinn. Birlinn is the old Scots Gaelic name for a longboat or war galley, the style of boat on which the Ness Yawl is based.
