The Lasko box fan is perfect for doing that kind of experiment. Theirs millions of those fans everywhere and they definitely aren’t a rare brand like some other fans videoed. In my opinion, a modern day Lasko box fan is pure junk anyway.

Yeah these fans are very plentiful in fact when I was 10 to about 16 I would grab these out of the trash and put thermal fuses in these and sell them and would sometimes make $200 during summer just selling fans at 5 to 10 a piece during the yearly neighborhood yard sale and later craigslist when I moved. The motors are often just fine if not just a bit dirty or seized I think if they stuck with the 130c fuses instead of going to the 115c they would be pretty reliable but they had the recall in 2004 and that's when they changed it so they are playing it safe I guess. I will say these laskos are far better than some other newer brands I've seen like aerospeed, coolmaster, comfort zone, climate keeper etc.

@ That’s interesting to know. I didn’t quite think that a thermal fuse could be replaced in one of those fans. In my area, I see a lot of Lasko 3733s tossed at the curbside. Maybe it’s a blown fuse. And yes, I am familiar with those beautiful blue plugs on Lasko fans, Lol. A Lasko 3733 or really any modern day box fan isn’t my fan of choice.

I have this same fan, I am having an issue with a slight electrical burning smell after I had cleaned it. The motor works and there is no smoke, but it does have that smell so I can't use it inside. the wire insulation was shot, so I taped them off thinking it was that, and I used the Zoom Spout oil for the bearings, but it I will try to change the capacitor next. Thank you for the video, I appreciate it.

Cool fan. Hunter always made top quality fans. I have a couple Zephair models which move a ton of air. Yours is cool since its a box fan. That thing runs nice and smooth....

Nice fan. Reversible is always a good thing. As far as that cap, keep it. I have a similar cap in my Westinghouse window fan from 64 and it also has a distinct smell.. Sprague seems to be the brand of choice since mine is identical. Chock full of PCBs. Lol. As long as it doesn't leak, I wouldn't worry too much about it. These fans will last a long time if kept oiled and clean. Good luck with it.
@jayhubman1188

I replaced the capacitor anyways bc old caps of this type are prone to fail and it's not ideal for this one to leak bc it sits over the motor and the contents could be corrosive. That being said I do see the value of using the old one since it's been there for decades and still works but it's not a risk I'm willing to take for originality sake and I also don't like the smell.

This fan is absolutely mint! I couldn't even tell the rear guard was damaged on video. These fans may not be rare but they sure are liked by collectors. Not only for the famous startup sound but also how powerful they are and how well built they are. I always liked the sound of these fans. That blade produces a very soothing sound. H73 would be the date code. This fan was manufactured in August of 1973.

I don't see how it's possible to find one of these in the wild for $2. I've been hitting pawn stores, goodwills, craigs, fb market, etc for a month now and never found one IRL within 100 miles. Consider yourself lucky brother!

I actually found it for 5 but talked him to $2 bc I was a broke 15 year old and I spent the rest of my money on computer parts. Tbh there are many fans I seen at that flea market that I would love to have gotten for what they were asking I just did not have the dough.

I have the pedestal version of one of those. Something to check with that Rt might be your blade set screw.
@jayhubman1188
@jayhubman1188 4 ай бұрын
A pedestal version of this would be very nice indeed. The set screw is on tight I'll just have to open it up again and figure out the noise issue. I think since its been opened before I got it and its been a few years since I worked on it and I have gotten better at working on these since there might be a spacer missing in the gearbox causing the gears to chatter.
@DBVintage
@DBVintage 4 ай бұрын
@@jayhubman1188 yeah if it isn’t the set screw being loose it’s likely shims in the oscillator gears.

What is it you find interesting about collecting? To me it seems like such a random thing to be interested in but clearly there's something to it if you and others do it.

Solid job on that restoration. I am a collector of all things old and electric. I always put more stock in a piece like this that has been cleaned up and repaired as opposed to repainted and made new again. You did a great job of cleaning it up and making it safe and functional without reducing the piece's history. Mad respect for people who can do this right. I have an old Vornado and an Emmerson Silver Swan that fit that category of clean-but-original approach to restoration. Good choice for alcohol for getting the paint off, but beware -- in my early days, I screwed up and wiped a dial scale on one of my tube sets clear doing that.
