It doesn't matter how many 'classic trials' that I watch on YT, with Bultaco's, Fantics, Majesty's and Honda TL's (my first bike was a TL125, it was a bloody heavy lump, but I loved it)..... I always think 'They aren't classics, they are the bikes I remember'. Then you realise that as a 60 year old knacker, you are talking about bikes from 40+ yrs ago!

Exactly! I'm riding a Bultaco 199b because it came out when I was in my prime in 1981. I always wanted a new one then so I restored one now instead!

@@2Wheels-OffRoad I always wanted to get the TL bored out to 150, buy a Sammy Miller hi boy frame, and reduced the weight a bit. In the end, I just bought a more modern, lighter bike 😁

@@stevegill1157 I still have my cousins '75 TL250. At 73 YO it really feels heavy. I put knobby tires on it and use it for trail riding. My '75 Suzuki RL250 on the other hand is substantially lighter, has trials tires, but when it's in my hands it might as well be 500 lbs. the way I ride 😂.

i had a TL125 bored out to 180 in a hi boy frame. But all I remember is trouble really. Kick start ratchet went because of the extra bore! I then moved onto Bultaco and my ride improved considerably!

@2Wheels-OffRoad You've made a cracking job of it! My mate took delivery of a 250, brand new.... It looked gorgeous (he had a red 250 beforehand, and the blue made it look so different from the original). I'm off to look at a few bikes tomorrow, ranging from pre-65, 80's, 90's and a 2yr old Vertigo. 60th birthday present to myself, even though it is 40yrs since I last rode a trials bike.... Phil's great video from Brookhouse Brickworks shows the venue, first used in the 1950s, at its best (or worst) depending upon one's view. It looks to have been a hard trial but to put it into context, the Expert route winner lost 25 and the last Expert rider was on 88, the best Green course rider finished on 7 with the last on 56, the best Clubman lost only 5 with the last on 86, so not horrendous scores after four laps of ten sections and a very tiring ride. No big steps, nothing nasty or dangerous, just a slippy trial.
@2Wheels-OffRoad21 күн бұрын
@@mikerapley1303 thanks yes correct Mike: it is the wearing down process for the riders, between the sections rather than inside the sections, that makes this such a test in a winter’s day. A great trial. And I feel like a hero today simply for finishing 😉

I really enjoy the video. I am 73 yrs. old and live in the U.S. I bought a 1975 Suzuki RL250 and if I remember, trials were just starting to be "noticed" in the states. I still own the RL and ride trails with it, not trials. They had a National Trials event several miles from my home in 1976. This gave my cousin who owned a 1975 Honda TL250 and I an opportunity to ride a real trials course. Gave us a real appreciation of the skill needed.
@2Wheels-OffRoad21 күн бұрын
Thanks for your story. When I was a lad my mate had a nice RL I always fancied one back then. More recently I’ve had a thing about the Honda TL250. I think there ended up being more of them sold in the US than the UK. Cheers Phil

great interview, and really good points. yes, trials is one of the only sports where everyone, as a person, is equal. doesn't matter who you are, what you do, how much you have in the bank, the best rider wins. doesn't even matter if you have the latest bike. i started riding in 1978, still love it, still enjoy a day with friends, still enjoy the challenge. Rappers i remember well from my schoolboy nationals in the 80's . happy days

Must say i agree with your views on man made hazards this really developed many years ago now largely starting with TV Exposure on kickstart and certainly at the time attracted some new riders but really in my view this has now so changed the sport it puts off more riders than it attracts .

I'm new in to trials but on these multi day rides, like the moer endurance ones, are they also getting penalty's on putting foots down? or is it timed?
@2Wheels-OffRoad2 ай бұрын
So in this Scott trial it’s a one day event. The riders are under time pressure and will lose marks for slower overall times, as well as putting foot down. So both! The Scott is called a time and observation trial
