Good explanation. It’s the alteration of the hand acceleration and rotation during the casting stroke that causes the tip path change.

Hello, do you also have a video on building a leader and tippet please? 🙏
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool Жыл бұрын
Hi J DS We are at the height of our fishing season so very busy. Can't do more videos at this time. However, this may help - This dropper knot video is for Loch Style fishing from a drifting boat with a Drogue to control your drift. The Tippet comprises 3 flies in a team approx 5 feet apart. The leader formula I use to turn 3 flies over is: 15" of 15Lb butt section to the fly line 15" of 10Lb to the 15, then, 16 Feet of 8.5Lb Flurocarbon leader with the flies 5 feet apart If it's very windy I increase the 15Lb to 18Lb to help turn the system over. If the water is still and clear I reduce the 8.5Lb tippet section down to 7.5Lb FC or 6Lb FC. In some places you can not fish 3 flies in a team so check your country regulations. The way a leader is designed is based on where you are fishing, what you are fishing for and the method you are fishing. So, I use up to 12 different leader set ups based on the above. If fishing a traditional method (Say single dry fly, I use a standard 9 foot tapered leader of approx 6Lb and add 3 foot of 6Lb tippet or thinner to end with a 12 foot standard leader. The connecting know is with a triple surgeons knot as in the video. Remember, in most cases if you can manage a longer leader you will catch more fish. I hope this helps. Cheers Peter

Hello, do you make the flight line a little longer at the forward cast and the back cast or only at the back cast? Thanks for help!!!
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool Жыл бұрын
Hi J DS Do not make the line longer on the back cast - that often results is slack line and bad loops. Much better to only do it on the forward cast which is more natural. I have a video called "Let it Grow" that describes the process. Many faults occur on the back cast because it's easy to induce slack line by mistake. If you are a brilliant caster you can release (but in full control) on the back and the front, but keep it simple for quick results. Hope that helps. Cheers, Peter

Hi JDS you certainly can't do that with your rod tip. A depth sounder wound be the best bet but if that is not an option the other thing you can do is fish a DI5 or DI7 sinking line and count down until you find the correct depth. Hope that helps. Happy fly fishing Peter

Hi there I’m a right handed caster when I try to present a straight line when dry fly fishing I’ve noticed the line curving to the left usually the last yard or so can you help?
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool2 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor, this is a common problem especially when you go from bait fishing to lure fishing to fly fishing. It usually occurs because you are bringing your rod tip to the center before the cast is finished. A bit like bringing the reel to your belly button too early. There is a video explaining what is happening to your cast at facebook.com/rainbowspringsflyfishingschool/videos/974606276048376 Hope that helps and you can share our channel to help fly fishers everywhere. Hi Lisa, not quite sure how to interpret your comment - sorry. What is important is when you stop the rod tip on the back cast do not let it creep forward before the line has fully straightened because it can reduce the fully loaded casting arc. I hope that helps. Happy Fly Fishing Peter

Hi. I would love to see a tip that helps me stop getting line memory. Tried various line makes, untwisted line through full length, stretched it night before but always seem to get coils when fishing. This pulls fly back towards me and makes casting and striking harder.
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, this is a common problem and can be caused by a number of things (Changing to a different fly line will not correct the issue). I have attached a link to help you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJfOeZJsmpesj7s I would also strongly suggest you treat your fly line with fly line dressing quite often as this helps the line slide through the runners more easily giving the line the chance to untwist in the shooting cast because it is more slick. I hope this helps you.

Do you have any instructions on how tall a leader should be? How long a tippet? Thank you!!
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool2 жыл бұрын
Hi JDS, I am not able to understand your question exactly, can you please provide better description for me to help you. However, in simple form the leader can be 9 feet long and then the tippet can be twice your shoulder width to turn over flies. That usually equally 11 feet together. Each time you change your fly the tippet gets shorter but this method allows you to preserve your tapered leader and continue to replace the tippet section. For Czech nymphing and French nymphing everything is completely different. Hope this helps. Thank you Peter
@Dorothyinstead2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. From what i can observe, the trick or skill lies in keeping the fly line taught throughout the upcast and subsequent downcast. Using the spring of the rod initially with the cast, and then increasing the rod spring with the haul of the line. The object of the exercise being to catapult the weighted fly line through the guides of the rod and out the tip. Like shooting a rubber band across a room.
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool2 жыл бұрын
Hi There, yes your description is correct - any slack or loose line in the double haul is your enemy. If done correctly the haul forces a bend lower down in the more powerful part of the rod, increases line speed and shoots the line out further. Happy Fishing, Peter

Hi Paulo, I do but only if there is no slack line in the air on the back cast. If you have issues and get slack line only release on the front until you are more practiced. Hello, can you also give some explanation (possibly with a video on your channel) about the length of the leader and the tippet? Can you fish with the same leader and tippet with a dry fly and with a nymph? And how do you know how deep you fish with a nymph? I live in europe but follow you very interesting channel! Thanks in advance!!
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool3 жыл бұрын
Hi JDS, if you are beginner you can fish with a standard 9 foot tapered leader for both dry and nymph. You can add tippet to that (about twice your shoulder width) so you are cutting the tippet part each time you change flies - that way you preserve the tapered leader. Depth of nymphs is based on depth and speed of current. Golden rule is try to get them close to the bottom. I often dip my rod tip in the water to understand depth. Hope that helps. Cheers Peter

@@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool Thanks Peter for this good information. But if the water is, for example, 3 meters deep, how do you know the depth?
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool3 жыл бұрын
@@jds4935 Hi J DS I literally push my entire rod into the water until it stops, that gives me a depth indicator - 9' rod = 9' depth. The other way to do is go heavy and deep and as soon as you start loosing flies go lighter and shorter.

I follow you from my home country Belgium! Can you also make some videos about the leader and the tippet please? How long should a tippet be? How do you fish with a sinking nymph? Do you have to use a different leader and tippet or can it also be done with the floating leader? How do you know how deep you are fishing? All questions that a learning fly fisherman would like to know. Thanks in advance!!
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool3 жыл бұрын
Hi J DS thanks for your questions, a little hard to cover everything off here, but this is some guidance for you. Use tippet in front of tapered leader so you can change flies regularly without wrecking your tapered leader, tippet selection should be same or thinner diameter than end of leader. Length of tippet no more than 2 times shoulder width connected with triple surgeons knot (cut off tag ends close). Get nymphs near the bottom by changing weight based on current and depth - most important to stay in contact with bites. Flurocarbon tippet helps here because it sinks. If you have the courage you can use your rod tip to determine correct depth to fish. Golden rule - GET YOUR NYMPHS NEAR THE BOTTOM on a natural drift if fishing upstream with an indicator. Hope that helps. Cheers Peter

Dear, how do you prevent the hook from flying in your hand?? Thx for information!!
@rainbowspringsflyfishingschool3 жыл бұрын
Hi J DS, 2 options for you. 1 hold the fly by the bend of the hook. 2 hold the leader 12" above the hook. More important, if you hold your rod hand and loading hand fully separated (as demonstrated in the slow motion take, you won't get yourself hooked up. It is a very common fault for your hands to be too close together. Regards, Peter
