It could be that or fighter behaviour for example. However, as a tourist, you wouldn't know beforehand. The best thing to do is to ask locals that you can trust, which fights are the real ones.

Heyy, just came across this channel through the recommendations. I wanted to add that the hawker lady at 10.15 was asking if you wanted the $4 or the $6 portion. Her accent was really strong so you didn't catch it. She just charged you the $6, which was not necessary because she knew you were a tourist and thus, she should have given the $4 portion as you were gonna just try local fare out for the taste. If Singaporeans order a portion, by default, she would have given the $4 portion because some people would refuse to pay for a bigger portion. Well, I guess being a hawker isn't easy because it is long hours in a noisy, hot environment so hope you can forgive her enterprising/(unscrupulous) manner =) Saying Hi from NYC =)

Thai durians are different than the Malaysian/Singapore durians. The Malaysian ones are typically far more potent, flavorful, pungent, and tasty I think! Thai durians are rather more bland in comparison. Some people may like that but I prefer the stronger tasting ones.

FYI, the durian stall you went to is a tourism scam. It's thailand durian, which is partially ripe durian. Singaporean only eat durians from malaysia which is fully riped. Currently May there are not much malaysia durians, most of them are imported from thailand. Next time if you're back in singapore, go to a honest stall (Ah Seng Durian, Lele Durian Singapore or The Durian Tree - Bukit Batok). If they are not selling durians, means the malaysia durain season is not there yet

@geniegal785 ай бұрын
@luxsolovoyager it depends on what you eat, possible to spend more when it comes to seafood... but no one in SG will spend that kind of budget daily on hawker street food... sgd120 for a day of hawker street food is really alot, covers lots of food... hope that does not include the durians Now that I have read the other comments, you were spending money to try as many different food as you can but not finishing them. Your caption is probably a little misleading. Some viewers might think that they need to spend so much on hawker street food in a day.

I'm sry for the lack of service mindset in these elderly hawkers. They are bad at explaining. Many times they were asking which option you want but they dont even bother explaining to tourist who wouldn't understand. One of the auntie meant $4 or $6 option. Another auntie meant do you want the hot or cold version. Locals usually eat the hot verison of cheng teng but maybe the elderly stereotyping is westerners prefer cold. That's why she lead with asking if u want cold version. Thai durain is bad and "unripe"(hard) despite big size. Singapore gets our durian from malaysia. Which is smaller but more creamier and flavourful. These grading are kinda a marketing gimmick. Sometimes cheap kampong durian is just as good. That guy wears a hermes, 80 to him is probably nothing. But too much imo for 1 durain. Not like it's 2kg+ de-husk.
@luxsolovoyager5 ай бұрын
True about the service in Hawker centres. Some vendors were just trying to upsell. I personally don't mind. These are hard working people so I don't mind paying a bit more since I can afford it. I would leave them a tip anyway. The Durian in Singapore was way creamier and more tasty indeed. The Hermes guy was a driver from a 5 star hotel not a guide. I just told him I wanted to try the best durian available in town. Have no clue how to spot a good durian, you probably know more than me :)
