Wanna know why the general took two horses with him ..onces the horse he is riding on for aless 7 hour it will get super exhausted and it need rest for a couple of days and bang the other horse is fresh with energy with no weight on it till the general get on it ... I grew up in Colorado and my father used to take me on long weekends of trip upto the mountains.we used to take four horse and the horse used to run not stop for 8 hour and we used to tie it in a neighbors backyard and ride the other horse for another 8 hour by the time we got back to our neighbors in three day .the horse that we left to rest was ready for the journey back home and get another two fresh horse with us and leave the other two tired pair there .

I watched back time and time again, Commodus, could have run for the sword, he didn’t look that injured from the wound inflicted from Maximus. And from his reaction being sliced by Maximus

Commodus was raised as co-emperor and this is why Aurelius knew that Commodus was unworthy. In real life, Marcus Aurelius felt he had no choice but to name Commodus as heir. That's how sorry a state the empire was in, but this makes for a good backstory for a well developed villain.

Definitely, this was the best movie in 2000. I remember there was a long line of customers trying to buy movie tickets during the premier. Fortunately, I arrived at the movie theater 2 hours before it got opened, so I could get a good seat to watch this awesome movie.

Marcus Aurelius is beating himself up too much! He didn't expand anything but only defended what was already built. He didn't bring the sword but met the sword with the sword against the Marcomanni, and that's coming from a Germanic sympathizer. He was known as one of the five good emperors. The last one who expanded the empire was Trajan when he conquered Dacia. Humility is one thing, but self-flagellation, now that's just too much! But at least he knows that he is hoping that there was a purpose to his life.

4:19 That would be considered a sexist comment in today's culture, but that is a huge compliment in a male dominated culture like that of the Romans. Marcus Aurelius knows that Commodus is an utter degenerate because he had him as co-emperor and knows how he would rule and wishes he could pass the reign onto his daughter.

I love the humility of both Maximus and Marcus Aurelius. Marcus Aurelius was like the Ronald Reagan of the Roman Empire. Both did make mistakes but were great rulers.

The dog is a stand-in for a pet wolf that Maximus had. They were unable to use a real wolf per local laws I believe. Also, she's technically a Belgian Tervuren (Shepherd) 😉🇧🇪💛 Her name was Kyte & she had a pretty stellar career of her own from what I remember reading in the Amazon trivia section of the movie lol

Back when Ridley Scott was actually good! Now this is one of his better films if not his best one! I think Joaquin Phoenix was trying to play Commodus again instead of Napoleon in the Napoleon film when one was an effective emperor who viewed himself as a Caesar whilst the other was an incompetent who drove Rome into the ground. Commodus, what a JOKER!

Actually, life as a gladiator was pretty good. They were well fed & trained and hired out for arms exhibitions and that was costly so they were pampered and never killed...unless you had deep pockets and could pay for the privilege. So it rarely happened.
@hamiltoncork5778

You are right although only in some circumstances. There were definitely some gladiators that were just there to be killed. Slaves and criminals were killed in their hundreds of thousands in the arena. Trained gladiators also definitely died in the arena, although as you say this was rarer. The film actually does a good job portraying this when Proximo is given the battle of Carthage.

@michaeldowson6988 well true but arguably if you fight in a gladiatorial arena you are a gladiator. Gladiators came in different shapes and sizes with varying degrees of ability. My point is being a gladiator was still a horrendous job. But you are defo right that some higher level gladiators were better off than some might think
