I had the pleasure of meeting L.B. at a record signing in California in 1978. I gushed my admiration for him for almost two minutes before I realized he didn't speak English! Nevertheless, we did manage to communicate coherently, and he was so nice and gracious. He was phenomenal in concert! An eternal BRAVO!!👏😁💯🎶🎹

Mesmerizing and timeless. Big thanks for uploading. Marvelous to see that recordings from very early in the 20th century were somehow preserved long enough to get digitized. Liked, playlisted (hopefully this is a permanent public upload). Paz.

This (and the following part II kzbin.info/www/bejne/jamwl4qQpdN7i5Y ) is not a "reference recording"!!! Why? Since nobody could play it even close to it... But it does not mean that other recordings aren't good. I also admire the Martha Argerich rendition kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipDGfHmjiZ6hsK8

The Welte recording system was a very sophisticated system based on the detection of key speeds by offset electrical contacts. Which controlled the more or less rapid opening of bellows (one per note) whose emptying was regulated by calibrated holes. This set of bellows with progressive opening acted by small levers on a rotary valve which ensured the registration of the different curves slow or fast crescendos or decrescendos available in the reproduction system (push up). We are therefore very close or even identical to what Ravel recorded in 1913

Despite the gramophone noise, there is a unique and clear reproduction. Listening to Rachmaninoff's Liszt is the ultimate feeling. Not only his advanced pianism and clarity of tones are expressed, but also the incredibly heartfelt and romantic exuberance; the gifted Rachmaninoff is not familiar with technical difficulties.
