dude why you talk about EUROPE and completely miss Central European countries? Like Czech republic and Slovakia have the best trail marking system in whole Europe (it´s not complicated, you cannot get lost there) as well as long distance hikes (in CZ longest trail has 2000km and in Slovakia 770 km). Also Slovakia has around 1200 bears. Worth to mention, don´t get it why u skipped these countries man.

Thanks you. Sooo much good ideas. Bit I would absolutely not recommend to use a grocery store plastic bottle instead of a Nalgene or titanium bottle. Most of them contains bisphenol A that dissolves in the drinking water and is not healthy at all. Use a good bpa free water bottle instead.

Just take some hot hands with you. Just 1 in your bag will warm you up no end and better than that Nalgene that possibly weighs more than 10 hand warmers.

A life blanket made of plastics as a fabric layer between tent and ground. I'm actually laying on it just like you in the video to decide where to build the tent. A milar life blanket under the sleeping bag, a layer of clothes between that bag and the blanket, + another life blanket laying over the inner tent's net and waterproof layer turns my 3 seasons into a cold snowy environment friendly tent. Ducktape for paraglide mesh has repaired my tent mesh from its scratchs.Disclaimer : it only get glued from inside because the outer side of the tent is waterproof. Having 3 pairs of socks weights nothing, adds a lots of resilience. That way, it has never been a challenge to get one dry and clean ready to use when needed. I like to change of it at midday, using again the previous used but dried pair of socks from yesterday (if I did not washed my feet at midday). Having an extra thin pair of sosks allows me to combine with another trekking pair in case of disconfort around my feet.

Tip 25 you need to remember that any plastic can break down and degrade, PET bottles do so in UV and when exposed to weather, and hot temperature....so dont store a pet bottle with water in for long time or use the same one continuously

I'm a tarp and blanket enthusiast.. you can wear a blanket under your jacket and fold a tarp to cover your bag. Can be much cheaper than traditional set up and about the same weight its also warmer more flexible to set up near fires. I often use my stove under my tarp and it traps so much heat vs a tent which you have to worry about burning. I use propane. It's big and bulky but it's reliable. For food I'd do partially preserved meats and pasta rice, simple stuff and save my freeze dried stuff towards the end. Hot sauce spices and a bag of brown sugar. I'm hypoglycemic. I'm not really a hiker but I live outside. So using the same stuff doesn't always make sense. I also make a lot of my own gear by hand or improvise I also like kombucha bottles. You can use it to pack in milk and it works great to keep hot liquids filter water into use it for soaking rice or use the bottom as a mortar and pestle.

Probably not a good idea to use "regular" plastic water bottles instead of a metal or "nalgene" bottle, as they are not supposed to be reused and if they are sitting out in the sun or getting warm, thats leaching the plastic. Silicone bottles are probably the best alternative.

The mesh more or less is a 'spacer' to keep a gap between your clothes and your body. When you view it that way, it makes a bit more sense. It traps warm air and gives sweat room to evaporate.

Few remarks, for many people thruhiking is associated with wilderness. Within Europe most trails have very little to do with wilderness, wilderness in Europe is pretty rare even the bulk of forests are better characterized as wood plantations than nature. With respect to wild camping, it is worth it to have a look at the definitions used for wild camping, wild camping may be illegal, it may still be perfectly legal or a legal grey zone to overnight in nature. Also be aware that rules/tolerance may differ depending on your mode of transport and type of shelter. With respect to the Via Francigena, the variant you show is the bicycle variant, specially the first half of the route, the pedestrian version is very different and passes through a more dull landscape.

Actually in italy it's forbidden to put up a tent for more than one night, usually putting up the tent at sunset and taking it down at sunrise ("bivaccare" in italian) isn't forbidden

If you’re a hiker/camper that only stays in the bush for 2-6 days the ultra lite gear with its outrageous costs are not worth it. I camp out in the bush for 2-4 days at a time and the only equipment I own that is ultra light is a tent.

Wait until you have a family of Sasquatches coming into your campsite and screwing with you, it's a terrifying experience and it's best to get out of there ASAP leave everything and save your life. Nothing is worth staying in your tent and waiting for them to tear you apart

Olive oil is unnecessary weight. You already have the fat you need in your body, even with a body shape like yours. Unless you are on your own for more than a week.

Just bring a luffa. They are a plant based spounge that you can grow rather easily or buy for cheap they make good spounged and can be used to clean many things. Light weight durable and rather cheap. Also for context the reason we use those yellow spounges is actually due to us using living spounges before they started to be harder to find so they made a synthetic option which became the norm.

Instead of one big plastic bag inside the backpack, I used smaller plastic bags to group things together: a plastic bag for food, one for clothes, one for the cooking gear etc. Much easier to find what you need.
