Wow I’ve always viewed you as a role model, a great kayaker and above all someone to aspire to but that helmetless surfing has changed my opinion. No good men left. Sort it out mate😢

We were on our first river of the day. With a second one to run we didn't want to waste any time. The first really big rapid was a 20' waterfall. Usually we would take the new paddlers out above the falls and look at it, But, we didn't want to waste any time. So I talked the three girls into following me. I took the safest line and they all ran it. Successful, we stopped and they walked back up for a second run. But I knew the river and the line. There were no variables to be concerned about, however in afterthought, I don't think I would do that again. Every paddler should know what they are getting into before they go

For really big guys, the XL PFD's don't do the job. I wish the industry would fully ratio up the flotation for 250 lbs and up. Make an industry agreement to spread the cost of a low volume product to price of the other sizes.

What’s the takeaway here? Was the wrong size worn? Right size worked?
@murrayweir11 ай бұрын
We think it was just an old BA (not that it was too small). Either way it didnt seem to provide a lot of floatation even though the kayaker was within the BA's weight range. Maybe the BA wasnt rated for boily white water? I guess the take away is wear a good BA while on white water.
@thelethalmoo11 ай бұрын
Kinda looks like she got dropped in the seam line a bit at the start. Sometimes having too much flotation can get you in trouble, and you want to just get in the seam and get pumped away from the nadty water! Rafting we always put customers in huge life jackets, its easier to rescue them but its kinda harder for thrm to rescue themselves. They seem to get body recirculated a lot more.
@JoshuaResta11 ай бұрын
Even a good PFD won't float well in white water because the aerate water doesn't provide resistance to the PFD to generate buoyancy. Encourage swimers to ballup with knees and arms into their chest when they are swimming towards frowny holes. They will sink down and flush out the bottom much quicker then getting recirculated on the middle/top layer of water. Either way looks like a solid swim ;) @@murrayweir
@traviskelly306911 ай бұрын
@@thelethalmoo Seconding this. She got dropped into the seam and sent her straight to the bottom and spit out underneath of the hole more than likely. That was a lot of down time, but I'd rather have that then get recirced in that hole.

@Diane-i7c Жыл бұрын
When you say "beginners," do you literally mean people who never kayaked before? I guess I would not have the guts to do this. I kayaked a few times 20 years ago in lakes, the people in charge of the group called it "sea-kayaking" and towed us back to shore if we were too tired to get back on our own.
@murrayweir Жыл бұрын
We took a bunch of people, some experienced and some people who had only kayaked in a pool once before + one river the day before. Your sea kayaking sounds much more responsible for the leaders. We were only doing this one section and had rescue set up so it was ok to send our beginners down this waterfall.

Why when that guys kept getting stuck in the stopper he lifted the wrong edge
@murrayweir Жыл бұрын
What time in the video are you referring to? At 0:47 in the graveyard, the red boat kayaker lifts the correct edge and changes the edge side to match direction. At 03:51 on the ski slope, the red boat kayaker also lifts the correct edge but cant paddle out. Upstream edge should be lifted up to allow water under the boat without catching the boats edge or rail.

how did the airbag come out? - I assume it wasn't fully inflated as if it was it would never have squeezed past the seat backband?
@murrayweir Жыл бұрын
It was being used as a front air bag so it was just in front of the footrest. There must've been a big enough gap for it to squeeze past while the person was swimming.
