I have a WD10EZEX-00BN5A0 and it has a noticeable hum. I could hear it going through the case. I ended up putting some thick foam under it and just laying it on that. Drive only had a couple of hours runtime on it. Now has about 2000 and no problems or errors (all SMART error counters are zero). Fastest HDD I have (~160+MB/sec).

Is that short screeching sound at 1:28 normal for WD Blue? Mine is NEW WD04EZAZ (4TB) and from time to time it will make a few similar high pitch noises in a row. I don't know if it's defective or good... kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6i9qJSPrJt1pNU

The reason why I prefer WD Green and 5,400 rpm drives. And they got killed off
@MariAmmaSar
@MariAmmaSar 3 жыл бұрын
The WD spec sheets say the 5400rpm version of this 1TB 3.5inch HDD is much quieter - wish I had known this earlier. Strange they dont have this 5400rpm HDD in Australia. The noise from this 7200rpm version bothers me - frankly I dont see the rational for a 7200rpm version for a HDD.
@XLGaming
@XLGaming 3 жыл бұрын
Trust me, you dont want the 5400rpm varient. Its much slower than the 7200rpm version. The sound only lasts while the drive spins up. I also have a 5400rpm 4tb vresion, and it is in fact quieter on startup, but the same volume while reading and writing.

My brand new HDD is the same as yours, wd10EZEX. It also makes that sharp beep sound. How has your HDD hold up over the years? Do I need to send it back for a replacement?

They're not loud at all. I have a wd blue WD10EZEX from 2017, and it's the quietest drive in my case, and the second quiest I own (first being my WD20EZAZ). WD Blues are one of the quietest drives at 7200 RPM you can find these days. Maybe your case is reverberating the sound of the drive, this happened to me with a cheaper case, but some older cases have the same effect, sepecially the cases with full metal drive mounts! All i know, is these drives arent louder than an entire system unless you literally have no fans anywhere.

Can someone please take out their wd10ezex and spin it close to ear? Grab it and twist your arm so the disk inside moves a bit. When I do that, it sound like the hdd has some sand inside. Seriously. Ffs, it's louder than the other wd blue from 2008...

I have the same drive and the spin-up noise is pretty much the same (which is normal) but continuous, your's is more fragmented like (wheeee-whe-whe-whe). Run some scans on it, check S.M.A.R.T. status just to be sure.

Guys, read WD specs. WD10EZEX is one of the loudest HDD. 29 dba at idle, 30 dba at load. But its also fast being a 7200rpm drive. WD10EZRZ which is also WD Blue drive is quiter, but has lower rpm.

Its not "stupidly loud", its just normal. The spin-up is only slightly loud if you are trying to listen to it, or if your case is uses all metal hdd mounts, which make the whole case reverberate the drive's sound. Other than the spin-up, the thing is nearly silent, and i cannot hear it in my case.

Its louder because of the way it spins up. Newer drives spin up in 2 seconds, older drives spin up in 4 seconds. This is due to the motors used, and WD used motors with more torque in their newer lineup, hence the louder spin up. The overall spindle sound is very quiet, even if the spin-up is slightly loud.
