Apparently a Paynes head gasket is better than the multi layer one, after 8 years my multi layer went Summit Motors always fit Paynes as they have replaced quite a few Multi layer gaskets

Recently bought an MG ZT 260 a couple of months ago. Chassis #469. Overall in very good condition, but it has cost me nearly £2000 already to replace the radiator, coolant hose, condenser, fan assembly, and horn 😭. BUT...I love her! I hope to get at least a year out of her before I move it on 😊👍

I love them. Had a TF for 3 years , great car. Now have the LE500 and love every second of owning it. Yes they have problems. Prevention is not always the key as things crop up.

Buyers guide for F and TF in only 10 minutes ?!? Well let’s have a look … Mr. Parker providing the details: we’re good, this will be accurate and correct. He is a well known matter expert well respected for his many years of expertise and advice. Only comment: years of age don’t need to have impact on the rear screen. Handling it with care (at the right temps) and maintaining it and it’ll stay in good condition.

I just purchased a 1973 MGB in Black Tulip with Ochre leather interior. The previous owner installed a Tremec 5 speed transmission. It's nice to cruise American interstate highways at 70 MPH and be @ 2500 RPM on the tac. I also have a 1969 Triumph TR6 I've owned for 35 years. I love the smell of walking into my garage and having it smell of old British sports cars! It always puts a smile on my face.

I'm somehow on my 5th F/TF maybe done 200k in total and probably fixed all issues, they can be very reliable, but you have to work at it! MOT time is always fun as something crops up like bearings, rotten wishbones, ball joints and the emissions can be pain - I believe the after market catalysts are rubbish. I agree about the tyres, definitely need to have stiff walled same brand ones (eg Toyo Proxi), for me the 16" wheels have a too hard ride, plus they dent on pot holes (they do look better!). Changing the head gasket takes time but is straight forward, he didnt mention that you should change the bottom oil rail to make the engine stiffer. BTW at 4 mins it showed the crappy head gasket, not the better MLS. Once sorted they are a hoot to drive, 40+ mpg, as someone else mentioned the road tax is a pain.

I own a ZR. 3000 miles after buying it the headgasket was starting to go. It was expensive to repair HOWEVER it has been a brilliant car and i love it. Use it as my daily. I went up for an inspection as im in the club and they gave such useful tips and answered questions i thought id have to deal with (i have a warning light for catalytic converter and its because its a modern one but its fine just the cars confused and needs to be mapped in the future) but they are fun exciting cars. I don't know how valuble they will get in the future but im keeping mine going for as long as i can.

No mention of deadly Ethanol. Stay clear of the E numbers and use only E0 at the pumps. Just because a HG has not been replaced means the engine has been cared for...

How does this impact the MGF which is a fairly modern design. I get that MGBs suffer fuel lines perishing but that's from a different age.

The commentator mentions repairs of structural members running as high as 25,000. Entire unibody structures are still manufactured and available. They are priced under $18,000 US. If the Midget you are looking at is as bodged as suggested, the reasonable course may be to buy it as a parts car and reinstall all of its components on a Heritage shell. The Heritage unit have been re-engineered to address the issues of corrosion, both by the use of different alloys and thickness of metal, but also by addressing some weaknesses in the original design of the body. It is a radical step, but it will create a car that will last far beyond the length of your interest in it.

Had a 98 F for over eleven years and loved every minute of it. It had all the problems that go with an F and only got rid of it due to ULEZ otherwise would still have it. It did not like mots, and ate up Lamba sensors and cats, found out that the water temp sensor used to fail throwing out the ECU, changed it and was OK after that.

I live in Thailand where these MGs are extremely rare. I found a red 1999 MGF VVC in Bangkok in February, 2nd, 2022 (2/2/22). I never forget this purchase date !!! 3 owners before, very original in "like new condition" only 45,000 km driven. Since I drove at weekends 5,000 km and had only one time on a motorway an overheating problem. At meetings I like to explain the people here that this is the last MG Roadster build in the UK before MORRIS GARAGE went to China. The "NEW CHINA MGs" are here very popular. To know there are approximately only 5 imported to this country makes me a proud owner. (Joachim Klemm, Founder and Past President of the MG CLUB BERLIN e.V. in 1986)

I bought my 2003 TF 135 in August 2017, paid £650, it was a lovely little car, I ran it for two years then did some upgrades, firstly I changed all the sub-frame mounts to stainless steel, next had the head gasket changed for a multi layer Payen type also had the oil rail upgrade and high tensile head bolts. Water pipes were also changed to stainless. I still have the car its Royal Blue 16" alloys with AP calipers. these cars are economical on fuel and reliable as long as you look after them. They can rust but my biggest bugbear is road tax £330 per year, I only do around 1000 miles a year so its annoying. You can't deny the fun of these cars they are lively and comfortable and great to drive, just make sure you buy one that's in good condition.

I have an MGF VVC and you’ve pretty much covered most aspects and I concur with tyre choice and uniformity and also regular checks on correct tyre pressures together with suspension and steering maintenance get all these right and it’s an amazing handling car get it wrong or cut corners at your peril.

The MGB is the perfect classic. Inexpensive to buy. Cheap to maintain. An excellent owners club. Every spare part is readily available. Improved Bs, as remanufactured by Frontline, are borderline-supercars. I myself own a '69 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV which has greater bragging-rights. A LOVELY car but I'd have tens of £thousands more in the bank if I'd owned a B instead.

After many MG's of all models I still retain an RWA Midget cos I love the A series lump . That said , after a trio of B's I came to a definate conclusion that If I wanted to continue driving a roof off car in the UK It had to be a Sunbeam Alpine . and going from a B to an Alpine was a revelation ....gone was the antquated old lever arm shockers in place of telescopic all round , gone was the nasty baulky non synchro box of the b into the delightful all synchro Sunbeam precision engineered bos with overdrive Gone was the cramped boot of the b and in its place a simply vast boot of the Alpine due to the dual wing mounted fueltanks then there is the driving experience of the wonderful microcell seating of the Alpine rather than the sit up and beg B the beautiful rear lift bonnet allowing easy access to the alloy headed 1725 engine as oppose to the gutless A60 Cambridge lump and braking that simply was so good that nothing required changing for the instllation of the Carol Shelby V8 tiger Then I look underneath and see not one but two chassis !! No wonder the thing was able to take the V8 with no mods as oppose to the MGB chassis that ends abrubtly somewhere under the drivers seat and we have not even mentioned the "Crack of doom " on the MGB door under the quarter light that nobody talks about . Nah !! the Sunbeam is in reality a huge leap over the B

Great review, back in my days living in UK I owned an MGC GT with Stage 3 Downton tune - incredible car, sounded awesome. I'd aways fancied a GT V8 though and I had a mate who had a Glacier White factory car, which only cemented my desire for one. Due to prices of factory V8s I started looking at conversions and finally found a lovely 73 GT in dark blue which had been owned for some 27 years by the man who did the conversion way back. He was an engineer. He used a tuned Rover SD1 V8 and the associated LT77 gearbox and other slight mods, but the whole car looked totally stock 1.8 litre plus its rostyles and no V8 badges - until you turned the key, a wolf in sheeps clothing. It was a lovely car and performed and handled much better than the factory V8s. Still one of my favourite MGBs was a 1967 Sandy Beige GT (stunning colour) I owned 35 years ago! It had a Webasto, black leather white piping, wire wheels, electric door mirror, redesigned heater/blower cooling system using eyeball vents on the dash, large centre console/arm rest in leather with space underneath, raised seats by an inch (makes a big difference I feel) and a steering column mounted overdrive switch based on a second indicator stalk so you could flick in and out of overdrive using a finger without taking your right hand off the wheel. All these mods were done in the late 60s by its first owner, all done to a very high standard. I sold it in 1988 and it appeared on the market 5 months back, still in fine fettle - sadly I missed it though! The clever overdrive setup had been changed to a gearstick switch.
