My great grandfather. Brings a tear to my eye thinking what we've lost. Why don't we teach the ballads anymore?

I think it’s typical of the Crachach and the dominance of a narrow construction of Welsh identity that most ‘experts’ on Welsh folk music have never heard of him.

Of all the money e're I had, I spent it in good company And all the harm I've ever done, alas it was to none but me And all that I've done for want of wit, to memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass, goodnight and joy be to you all If I had money enough to spend, and leisure time to sit awhile There is a fair maid in this town, that surely has me heart beguiled Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips, I own she has me heart enthralled So fill to me the parting glass, goodnight and joy be to you all Of all the comrades e're I had, they are sorry for my going away And all the sweethearts e're I had, they'd wish me one more day to stay But since it fell into my lot, that I should rise and you should not I gently rise and softly call, goodnight and joy be to you all.

It is good but I always find Dominic’s singing a bit mannered except on more comic songs. The solo Luke Kelly version of this is sensational - he may have learnt it from Dominic though as he wrote and adapted a lot of songs for the dubkiners

As said above this is Johnny Doughty singing the song. It's taken from the LP "Round Rye Bay for More". He lived in Rye, Camber to be precise, until his death. As a child he taiught my brother and I to row, splice and all the rest. He used to hang out a lot at Rye Harbour and one day a person from the BBC (I think) heard him singing in the William the Conqueror pub and he made the LP. The cover photo on the album shows him steering the Helen Mary - RX82 - into the river mouth along with my father who owned the boat.

Not exactly the original lyrics, but closer than Carter's "Wildwood Flower." The original lyrics can be seen here: www.ergo-sum.net/music/MaudIrving.html

Beautiful! What gorgeous harmonies.I love the fact that all three voices are so distinct and add to the feeling in the song rather than just having harmony for its own sake.

absolutely brilliant. I have dear old friends in Ireland and bought this on tape on one of my trips there many years ago. Sadly some of my friends have passed on but these voices never fail to bring a back fond memories of my times in Clare and the west of Ireland. Beautiful people, beautiful place, beautiful music.
