Dude I get hit with a whip every single time I use one. That’s just part of creating new technique. Comes with the territory. Hurts most times but I’m so used to it I don’t even react anymore. Unless it’s a really really good one.

Not sure if you fly fish or not but as for a tapered cracker , dry fly anglers could not do better than a ferraled leader. You can use the same concept to make tapered crackers just make a miniature ferraling board & may I suggest Spyder Wire fishing line as your material. It is pure dyneema fiber which is more than twice as strong as Kevlar ( dyneema is 15× stronger than steel , Kevlar is 7× stronger than steel) . You can beat the shit out of dyneema popper and it just laughs, throw a few knots along the length and you've got a can cutter
