Thank you for a great presentation. I have been involved in keeping and breeding the original South African boerboel type since 1997and still trying to retain the Grasland boerboel bloodline, so totally I understand your sentiment. Hope you found a plausible solution to the dogs you mentioned.

Almost every line of gamedogs has a few examples of that trait. They do not select for nerves...they select for gameness, drive, and ability. So, when building a line of APBTs capable of doing hogwork and protection work, I wanted to eliminate that trait...and we have done so.

I have owned Sorrells, Hammonds, Eli, Chinaman, Mayday, Barracuda, Redboy/Jocko, Strickland, Greenwood, Patrick crossed dogs, Camelot (game based Camelot, not the weight pull stuff), and others over the last few decades...however, it should be obvious and not required to state that one does not have to own a line to have hands on experience with it OR even to have an education on the other lines out there.

Sir. Or ma’am these days who knows. You are….ding ding ding the winner for this comment thread. See every single post or video about dogs, especially pits, there is always at least one person who says several sentences that prove they literally know nothing about dogs. If they even owned any kind of special breed even for a short time, they would type different words. lol. I seriously am entertained by the continuous jabs at the top 12-15guys I know of who are basically bulletproof with the years of success they have in breeding multiple lines and still there’s always a 19yr old in his mother’s basement or a bitter broke 50yr old chime in some negative comments. Read books. And stuff

Lee, my sentinel 9 months old has super sharp teeth. Do sentinels just have extremely sharp teeth or as young dogs are their teeth sharper? She rips stuff super easily with little pressure and if she mouthes me it feels like knives not teeth. Also, how do I tell how intense my pup is? Like she's definitely got a lot of drive but I can win tug of war pretty easily and she doesn't always want to engage unless I do it right. Thinking this is my lack of skill to develop it, how do I tell her potential? She's echo aka Lela jean
@APBT-Bandog
@APBT-Bandog 2 күн бұрын
She is yielding to you likely because of your alpha position...out of respect since you are her handler/owner. Make sure you are not too dominant over her and that you do not use too much compulsion. Keep it fun, and let her win when she does good...and her commitment should increase. As far as her teeth being sharp...our dog's teeth are unlikely to be sharper than any other dog's teeth.
@risky_.y8137
@risky_.y8137 2 күн бұрын
Okay. I did try making her win, she definitely got more into it and her grip strength increased by like 7x but still can't pick her up yet without her dropping it. Also she won't have fun after like 2 mins. Unless I give it to her to bite, then take it back after like a min, and repeat. But at that point its more like she's trying to take it and tear it apart rather than a tug of war where she's actively fighting against me. But I'll try more of this. Also btw she's coming along nicely, she was 56 pounds when I got her, and she's 56 pounds now but way leaner and a little more muscle. You can barely see her ribs a little in the right lighting. She's also a lot more confident and getting more impulse control and respect for me which she had 0 of for awhile.

This shows you what kind you knowledge and experience you have. Knowing that dog was handled with a heavy hand. How you say good boy with a lighter tone voice. While you can learn certain amount as a trainer, somethings have to be natural. Kind of like Michael Jordan. Somethings are just natural. You sir are very highly educated but, you have natural talent to breeding/ training that just can't be taught.

You have the most technically sound pitbull and bandog program in the USA. I dont know any big name or small pitbull breeder that actually test their pitbulls hips. They just all assume they are good. This tell what kind of program you run. You dont leave anything to chance. That is a great trait.

Easy answer: Bandogge by far. That’s what they are bred for.
@APBT-Bandog
@APBT-Bandog 3 күн бұрын
A good APBT with the right traits can be an excellent protector, but on average they are smaller and less protective than a bandog. If you compare the perfect APBT for that job to an American Sentinel, then there may be little difference perhaps, but when you compare average to average, the American Sentinel is superior to the APBT...and that is because the extra size and because on average the typical American Sentinel has a more natural protective instinct.

Does hybrid vigor come into play when both dogs are very tightly bred but coming from different lines?
@APBT-Bandog
@APBT-Bandog 2 күн бұрын
It would be normal in such situation, but if both dogs are exceptional and were not much different in ancestry, then you may not see much difference. Also, some lines just don't click well.
@Calitamittcob
@Calitamittcob 4 күн бұрын
Do you find that the undesirable traits are stronger even in a dog that is a keeper? Example the dog has the ability power drive but the litter has an over bite now. Would you outcross that out or step back a generation then outcross to prevent and overbite from occurring at all.

Everything’s good I would suggest a harness though. That’s a lot of tension on the neck. You’re a great dogman though!
@APBT-Bandog
@APBT-Bandog 4 күн бұрын
The problem with a harness is the dog can pull so much harder...and generally we walk our dogs with collars...therefore they should learn to work with collars. Harnesses are good in some situations though, such as a young dog or a dog its first time being worked.

I notice he is quick to listen but blows off the stay command. I quit using stay all together and make the dog hold whatever command (sit down stand etc) until given a "free dog" command so they know when to break. Less confusing for the dog, 1 command as opposed to using a command to reinforce multiple commands. Everyone and every dog is different just a thought, worked on my 2year old rescue rotti with 0 training. Love the ASCs btw

The toy is used to teach or refine the behavior, but once the dog knows the behavior and chooses to not comply, then compulsion becomes necessary.

@ and how do you recommend going about that
@APBT-Bandog
@APBT-Bandog 9 күн бұрын
@@matthew-ww6vs It depends on the dog, your skills, patience, level of distraction, and what you are specifically trying to train. Because of all these variables, it may be best to hire a local trainer that is qualified and ask them if they will give you a one hour course on how to best work with your dog. They will need to see what you are doing so they don't need to waste time discussing things you are good at, but instead can spend time working on things that you need help with...as well as to discuss your objectives.

@APBT-Bandog
@APBT-Bandog 9 күн бұрын
I understand he is your friend, but do you really think he would ever admit to a 50 year old secrete that his legacy was built on after all this time? Like I said, why would someone build a line on a blind dog inbred 4x over to his daughter, granddaughter, great GD, and then great-great GD to a point that his COR is 94% and his COI is 47%, which is 20% over the general onset of sterility and which sterility is almost a certainty at 37.5%? And then build off his inbred son, Scrub, who lost? Mr. Floyd was a great dogman, but I simply just don't believe that pedigree is correct.
