Growing up in Arkansas we had a pileated woodpecker who made home in the side of our house and raised a family one or two summers. I can't remember all the details but I remember exactly where it was and how exciting we all found it to be. Yesterday I walked out to the mailbox. As I was returning to the front door I noticed a two or three inch woodpecker hole in one of the columns on my front porch. It's not a particularly wide column so I'm assuming a downy is the creator. We get downy, hairy, and red bellied woodpeckers at the feeders. I still think it's cool. I don't see any termite damage or obvious insect activity although the ants have been persistent this year. I guess I'll watch the video now. Thanks in advance.

I have bird feeders that attracts alot of birds, cardinals have tripled and they eat the latern Flys. I had to search about this insect I've never seen before. I think putting bird feeders in areas of these Flys would help. I live in northern Virginia area. Beautiful Cardinals here.

My house is covered in different species of spiders. I am terrified of them although they intrigue me. I've got a lot of different pictures! Very big spiders some of them.

Is there a more up-to-date map of the infestation across New York? It seems my area should be upgraded, these bugs are everywhere these days.

Hi Scott - an interactive spotted lanternfly distribution map is available on our website. It shows counties with individual finds and infestations: cals.cornell.edu/new-york-state-integrated-pest-management/outreach-education/whats-bugging-you/spotted-lanternfly/spotted-lanternfly-reported-distribution-map

I love this! I discovered this year that hostas are edible in the early Spring so I've been telling folks, jokingly, that I've been growing an apocalypse garden with some unconventional edibles. This gives great ideas to add to it!

They don’t take two years to get large, they do it in 1 season. Also, they do displace native species. They compete with other spiders for prey for food and space, even taking over native species (spiders) webs. I live in the southeast us and they are definitely impacting the ecosystem.

It will be interesting to see how universal soil/tree interactions influence the next generation of orchards. -endo/ecto microbes shifting the entire ag input landscape -roots inoculated with prescriptive blends from the nursery -Pasture and orchard system blending with a whole system reimagined definition of food “safety” -the journey of becoming once again a 🍎 people trust has integrity

Facts about Starlicide, avicide, which is popular in USA and banned in Russia and EU. "Other dead bird searches around bait sites near the roost and at feedlots produced 1 dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis), 1 common flicker (Colaptes auratus), and 1 cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)." "Before the treatment period, searches for dead birds on transects in the roost as well as at random in peripheral habitat around bait sites produced no dead nontargets other than a few blackbirds. However, three searches conducted after treatment began and extending over a 10-day period revealed 11 cardinals, 1 blue jay, and 2 white-throated sparrows, all victims of Starlicide baiting." Even pro-poisoners admit, that it's impossible to fully avoid deaths of non-target species. So, if ecologist approve it's use, it looks strange.

Very informative program on Jumping Worms! Who, at Cornell, is carrying on similar research and could be contacted with observations and questions? I had a severe infestation in September 2021 in one of my flower beds. I eventually removed all the damaged perennials, gathered/bagged all the mulch and granular soil, and laid down clear plastic to hopefully solarize and kill any remaining worms/cocoons. I ended up leaving the plastic down for July and August because I couldn't get a consistent 105 degrees for 4 days. I replanted in fall of 2022, hoping for the best, but discovered in September 2023 more jumping worms who had survived all those efforts! I'm very interested in staying connected with NYS folks who are exploring solutions for homeowners. Thanks.

I have these; they completely displace native worms, they are very slow to multiply in the spring, and they devour organic matter at a rate I've never seen. Hard to prove, but my native worm eating birds tend to just vacate areas where they are, only returning at 'berries and bug' season. They produce a shot of extra N just about the time I would have usually spread some Urea, soooo.....ok? Also, that 'grapenuts' topsoil makes an excellent planting medium for late roots like carrot/beet/rutabaga, and my yields on those sites has been excellent.

Thank you for such thorough information! I do not use the microwave except to occasionally warm up a neck pad so I store dried fruits and notes in it and started to see a few moths flying out of it. I looked and saw an unopened container of dates with larvae. Should I throw the microwave out because I’m unable to get inside of the vents with cleaner, as I’d think that would be unsafe?

Do the adult moths feed on the fibers? Or is it only the larve that are equipped with the necessary mouth parts to break down those fibers?
@NYSIPM
@NYSIPM Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question! The larvae (caterpillars) are the damaging stage of this insect. The adults do not cause any damage to textiles.

Can UV light bug zappers attract and kill meal moths? Scenario: if I install a bug zapper in my pantry, will it keep meal moth in check? Or is it a complete waste of time and money? I understand it won't target the larve problem though.
@NYSIPM
@NYSIPM Жыл бұрын
Light traps are not very effective for pantry moths and clothes moths because these insects are not light-attracted species. There are pheromone traps that will attract male moths, and while these can be used for monitoring, they will not keep the population in check. Finding and eliminating the source is the best option for long-term management.
