The big problem with this prototype was logistics, they had to change the design 3 times because they didn't give them the right engines, this model had an engine with peek performance at 3km wich was old and retrofitted thus delaying development and giving it poor performance, the papers had a completely different engine in mind when they had it drawn for the first time, we wasted an opportunity.

The combination of a conventional engine with the jet engine - was kinda repeated by the Americans with some of there hybrid prop-jet fighters after WW2. So in some ways - the Italians & Americans traveled down a similar path. Who knows what the Italians might have developed with more funds.

This was *not* a turbojet engine. It was a design concept the British rejected out of hand not wasting time going down that route. This engine played no role in the development of the turojet engine.

not a turbo jet but a jet engine, similar principle to the 1910 Coanda jet engine, except the coanda effect discovered during the designn from the Coanda compressor, DID pay a role in the turbojet engines, and nnot only...one Coanda compressor is still preserved in a french museum (Coanda , who was Romanian, make he's learnings and researches in France)

Yes I know that plane and the museum. It was so good I went twice. It is a day out from Rome with train ride then taxi ride however, when you get there it is quiet, well organised and no screaming brats. It also has the Macchi-Castoldi MC-72 operated by Warrant Officier Francesco Agello who set the (to date unbeaten) fastest speed ever attained by a piston-engine seaplane: 711.462 kmh (442.176 mph) in 1934. I am a qualified pilot Give me that plane, it is so beutiful

Let us be quite clear: it was what was (and is still) termed a 'motorjet', which is the term correctly used here. It was obviously not a gas turbine and was extremely inefficient in terms of fuel consumption. It was effectively a ducted fan, driven by a piston engine, with a crude afterburner arrangement in the exhaust duct. Modern reheat/afterburner systems are equally inefficient but are a lightweight means of increasing thrust by 50percent or so. However, to achieve that thust increase, the fuel consumption can be doubled (at least). The reported top speed of the Caproni-Campini N.1 (aka C.C.2) in 1940 was around 230miles/hr. Compare this with the Gloster E.28/39, which achieved around 370miles/hr during it early flights in 1941, with its Whittle/Power Jets W.1 engine derated to 860lb thrust.

British Hurricane fighter pilots reported they were impossible to shot down . Due to the superior aerobatic ability shown by the Italian pilots . And as far as I can find there was only one lose and that was due to engine failure .

An example of the terminology of that era . A " jet " was not only an airplane with a turbine engine . It included rocket propelled aircraft and planes like this one from Italy . The Fieseler Fi-103 R was propelled by an Argus pulse jet , the same as the buzz bomb. It would have been called a jet if encountered in combat .

The "first" jets (subjective) were already worked on in 1930s by Britain, for example. But did not receive the crazy funding and manpower needed until during WWII. Many arrived at similar conclusions in later decades, but all due to existing work, spied upon and then researched further. Some with a slave labour force. Some with more access to precious metals.

Always loved the Campimi-Caproni N.1. I have a model kit of one somewhere. An odd 1/50th scale, I think. As a fantasy build, I might add 20mm cannon at the wing roots and rocket racks outboard of the wheel wells. With a North Africa <<Pizza Crust>> camo scheme, and white Mediterranean Theater fuselage meter band. It would annoy the historical purist rivet counters.

Italy invented the afterburner but forgot the jet engine. Poor old Italy does not have the best of reputations when it come to the military of WW2 but the Royal Navy viewed the Italian navy as more of a threat than the German navy and it had better armour than the Japanese navy. Their biggest problem was quality control on the ammunition propellent charges which meant shells from the same Italian salvo could be both 100 yards short and 100 yards long and all miss the RN warship entirely.

Some people in the automotive industry think of the jet engine as being a logical extension of turbocharger or supercharger technology. The blowers in turbocharged and supercharged engines simply evolved and grew to the point where they no longer needed the reciprocating piston parts. If so, this aircraft would seem to sit at a half-way point in this development path. A very interesting video, thank you.
@RoamingAdhocrat
@RoamingAdhocrat Сағат бұрын
Kinda. The early jet engines had centrifugal compressors with similarities to supercharger compressors. But jet engines swiftly moved onto axial flow designs. (And the development of superchargers and turbochargers at the time was principally for aircraft engines, not automotive) Don Giandomenico (rcdon) built some really cool DIY turbine engines, some using automotive turbochargers as the compressor and turbine. What becomes quickly obvious is even though at its core a jet engine has just one moving part - the shaft with the compressor and turbine - to make it work you need an awful lot of fuel pumps, oil pumps, oil coolers, not to mention the starter system...

@@sjoormen1 yes. as said in the video, it was not a turbo jet, but a moto jet. by your logic, a turbo prop would be a jet. there is a difference between the means of propulsion (jet, prop) and the kind of engine that powers the whole thing (turbine, piston engine, steam turbine, rocket engine...). it is a bit like in power generation where you can have impulse turbines and reaction turbines, each of which can be paired with whatever primary power source.

Called a motor jet (as opposed to turbo jet). It was a very poor implementation with a poor piston engine and a non existent supercharger that sullied the reputation of the motor jet. The NACA tried to make a transonic motor jet called “Jake’s Jeep” that became the bell X1. Caprioni did intend to develop a turbojet using a water cooled turbine.
