A fine, evocative piece of music which takes me back to the mid 60s. Odd that it was not used in an urbane romcom but in a movie about a group of people trying to survive and get out of the desert, where their plane has crashed.

Over a decade later to the conversation 😂 I was searching around for information on this roll, but didn’t turn up anything on Mastertouch. I believe QRS had some master rolls they licensed to Mastertouch, I’ve seen other American arrangements on their label before. I’m so happy that in 2024 QRS still cuts this roll, number Q-259 now. I spoke to the manager of their perforating plant shortly before COVID and they were struggling even then to keep up with demand so there’s definitely plenty of us player piano (in my case push-up pianola) owners out here!
Wow such great childhood memories at my grandparents’ house. We had that exact piano roll. Been ages since I’ve heard it. We had to pump the special foot pedals to make it go. Being kids it took all we had to get through the entire song and we had to brace our hands under the keyboard to get enough leverage to pump the pedals hard enough. This is great. Thank you!

I really really appreciate your devotion and expertise in this American art form. I ran across your Gulbransen web page while I endeavor to help a client find out why his Gulbransen player will not play even as the roll is playing. Didn't know about the shut-off pnuematic till I saw it explained by you. When I go back over there, we will pursue that angle. Since the roll wants to shift to rewind even as it starts to play, I suspect a leak in the expression tubing somewhere. Anyway thanks loads! Signed, Pneumatic Fanatic

We are a band of Patriots who each leave home and friend, Our noble Constitution and our Banner to defend, Our Capitol was threatened, and the cry rose near and far, To protect our Country's glorious Flag that glitters with many a star. Chorus Hurrah, Hurrah, for the Union, boys Hurrah Hurrah for our forefather's Flag, that glitters with many a star. Much patience and forbearance, the North has always shown, Toward her Southern brethren, who had each way their own; But when we made our President-a man whom we desired, Their wrath was roused, they mounted guns, and on Fort Sumter fired. They forced the war upon us, for peaceful men are we, They steal our money, seize our forts, and then as cowards flee, False to their vows, and to the Flag, that once protected them, They sought the Union to dissolve, earth's noblest, brightest, gem. We're in the right, and will prevail, the Stars and Stripes must fly! The "Bonnie Blue Flag" will be hauled down and every traitor die, Freedom and Peace enjoyed by all, as ne'er was known before, Our spangled Banner wave on high, with stars just Thirty Four

I found this roll amongst 1000 others. It had no leader or name and beginning was damaged but was able to join a new leader on . At least it was only the intro before lyrics started. From the lyrics had a bit of an idea what tune might be called. One of my favourites. Ian

One of a limited number manufactured by Gulbransen around 1928. Not custom, but few still exist. This was a flagship model that came too close to the end of the era.

Hi, I'm sorry, many times these compilation rolls have no content listing. I do list them if possible, but many of the old tunes, I don't know the names.
@written124 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean. Thanks so much for responding. But I can say with near certainty that September in the Rain is the second one. The song actually came from one of those 39s musicals. 42nd Street or one of the Gold Digger movies.

We are a band of brothers and native to the soil Fighting for our Liberty, With treasure, blood and toil And when our rights were threatened, the cry rose near and far Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star! Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights, hurrah! Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star. As long as the Union was faithful to her trust Like friends and brethren, kind were we, and just But now, when Northern treachery attempts our rights to mar We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star. First gallant South Carolina nobly made the stand Then came Alabama and took her by the hand Next, quickly Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star. Ye men of valor gather round the banner of the right Texas and fair Louisiana join us in the fight Davis, our loved President, and Stephens statesmen are Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star. Now here's to brave Virginia, the old Dominion State, With the young Confederacy at last has sealed her fate, And spurred by her example, now other states prepar' To hoist high the bonny blue flag that bears a single star.

I have an old roll "Spirit of Liberty" by Rosey, by Standard Music Roll Co., Electra. Unable to play it on the piano since it's too ragged on the edges. I fear I'll tear it even more if I play it on the piano. Is it the same tune?
@webglider19626 жыл бұрын
Ragged edges can be made playable again with the careful application of tape to the back edge. Clear archive tape that is acid free and care not to block any perforations :)

Don't see any holes that Recordo would have used to vary the volumes. While they didn't have near the realism of a reproducing piano they didn't just play at one volume. I think the sustain pedal is all I see cut on the side of this roll.
@webglider19627 жыл бұрын
This is a standard roll played on the Recordo player piano. It does not state that the roll is Recordo. This particular Recordo mechanism has 16 levels of intensity, making it equal to the best reproducing player pianos ever built. It is most certainly a reproducing piano. There are a few different Recordo player models, this is relatively rare. If you care too, you will find other clips of the piano playing Recordo rolls on my channel, plainly stated on each clip. Thanks for the comment.
@acousticedison7 жыл бұрын
I stand corrected. I had searched reproducing uprights and saw the Recordo player and assumed that was what I was going to hear, I didn' t look carefully enough at the description. I didn't know that Record made a comparable recording playback similar to Welte or Ampico. We have a Steinway B, also and unusual mix.
@webglider19627 жыл бұрын
No problem, easy to overlook. There just aren't a whole lot of Recordo rolls available and there are three Recordo systems. This being the rarer, with it's intensity levels and response, given the quality of the roll of course. Many thanks for your comment
@acousticedison7 жыл бұрын
Do I recall right that QRS put out some Recordo Recuts for a while?
@webglider19627 жыл бұрын
Yes they did, I don't have any, but have seen them. Getting rolls that match the system is like winning the lottery. Just because it's marked 'Recordo' is no guarantee that it will use all the intensity levels.

The people who lived next door to me in 1961 or 2 had a player piano in their basement and this roll was one of the small collection of rolls that they kept (in their original long boxes) on top of it. I've had this tune in my head for decades but have never actually heard it again until today, which is weird because it began running through my head this morning, for some reason, and so - just for the hell of it - I decided to 'google' it. After a few random attempts, your listing came up, webglider1962, and I thank you for providing it. As I recall, there were lyrics printed on the roll, as it played, but I can barely remember them - although, even way back then they seemed a little bit 'insensitive' in a racial sense. They seemed to be about an American man who falls in love with a woman from Hong Kong and decides to go back there: "So long, so long; soon America, so long ..." Who knows, webglider1962, the roll you own just might be the same one my neighbors once had in their basement! Would you be kind enough to provide the copyright year and publisher/manufacturer info if you still have its original box? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for publishing! It was a real hoot to hear it again!
